Chapter 6: The Mask of Morning

The grand oak front door of the mansion swung open smoothly beneath my hand at precisely 6:15 AM. I stepped into the grand foyer, letting the heavy clack of my leather-soled shoes echo against the imported Italian tile just loud enough to announce my arrival. The house smelled faintly of roasted coffee and expensive lavender air freshener—the curated facade of domestic tranquility that Elena maintained with terrifying precision.

Maria emerged from the pantry hallway, her apron tied neatly around her waist, her dark eyes darting anxiously toward the staircase. She took a sharp breath, her hands folding over one another in a classic gesture of warning.

"Mr. Daniel," she murmured under her breath, stepping forward just an inch. "You're back early. Mrs. Vance... she slept in the master suite. The man left through the rear courtyard gate around three in the morning."

I offered her a tight, reassuring nod, keeping my voice low and steady. "I know, Maria. Thank you for watching out for me. Just keep doing your work, and don't let on that you've noticed anything unusual. I'm going to handle this."

Before she could reply, the soft click of heels sounded on the curved wooden staircase above. I turned, letting a tired, affectionate smile spread across my face as Elena descended into the foyer. She wore a silk mulberry bathrobe, her long dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, her expression shifting instantly from cool calculation to warm, practiced relief.

"Daniel!" she cried out softly, rushing down the final steps to throw her arms around my neck. "You're back! Your flight must have landed hours earlier than you said."

Her perfume—jasmine and vanilla—filled my senses, masking the underlying scent of deceit. I wrapped my arms around her waist, playing the part of the weary traveler returning home to his devoted wife, while my gaze looked past her shoulder toward the glass table in the formal sitting room where the divorce papers still lay waiting.

"The conference wrapped up ahead of schedule," I said, pressing a light kiss to her cheek, feeling her skin tighten slightly beneath my lips. "I missed you, Elena. It feels good to finally be home."

She pulled back just enough to look up into my eyes, her smile dazzling and entirely hollow. "I missed you too, baby. Why don't you go upstairs, unpack your luggage, and freshen up? I'll have Maria make us some fresh coffee, and we can sit down and talk about... well, everything."
