Chapter 4: The Late-Night Ally

Robert Vance’s downtown office on the thirty-second floor of the Frost Bank Tower was dark save for the ambient glow of the Austin skyline piercing through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. Vance, a senior partner in corporate and marital law with silver hair, sharp wire-rimmed glasses, and a reputation for treating litigation like a chess grandmaster, sat behind his mahogany desk. He didn't look tired despite the midnight hour; men like Vance lived for crisis.

I sat across from him, placing a secure encrypted flash drive on the polished wood surface between us. I had spent the forty-minute drive from the estate pulling remote server backups from my home office network—backups Elena didn't even know existed, mirroring financial records, corporate communications, and shared cloud drives.

"Let me make sure I understand the scope, Daniel," Vance said, his voice measured as he pushed his glasses up his nose. "Your wife Elena, along with a junior strategist named Marcus Vance—no relation, thankfully—is coordinating a fraudulent asset split. She has pre-signed documents ready, and she's bleeding your personal liquidity while maintaining the facade of a devoted spouse."

"That's the surface," I replied, leaning forward, resting my forearms on the desk. "Marcus was promoted into our corporate development division six months ago at Elena's subtle urging. He’s been quietly positioning himself to audit our regional subsidiary holdings. If they file for divorce tomorrow morning using standard community property motions, they intend to freeze my corporate voting shares under the guise of marital asset protection, effectively giving Marcus the leverage he needs to execute a hostile takeover of my firm from the inside."

Vance’s eyes narrowed, a slow, appreciative smile touching the corners of his mouth. "An insider job wrapped in a domestic dispute. Classic, messy, and devastating if it catches you flat-footed. But you didn't walk in here with your hair on fire, Daniel. You walked in here with server backups."

"I saw them through the glass, Robert," I said softly, the memory of Elena's smiling face flashing behind my eyelids. "I heard her lying to my face on the phone while standing in my living room with him. I'm done playing the victim. I want an absolute financial firewall erected before the sun comes up."

Vance picked up the flash drive, turning it over in his weathered fingers before sliding it into an encrypted desktop port. "Done. We initiate a quiet forensic review of every personal and corporate account starting right now. We freeze joint discretionary lines without triggering electronic alerts on her end. We find out every shell company Marcus has his fingers in, and we pin every unauthorized wire transfer directly to them." He looked up, his gaze steady and piercing. "When we strike back, Daniel, we don't just win the divorce. We take away their entire foundation."
