Chapter 8: The Gala

The ballroom was a blinding sea of black-tie formality, champagne flutes, and glittering jewels, all gathered to celebrate the Vance Foundation's annual philanthropic gala. From my vantage point near the service doors, I watched Richard take the podium on the elevated stage, bathed in golden spotlights. He looked every inch the benevolent patriarch, his silver hair neatly combed, a warm, grandfatherly smile creasing his weathered face as he adjusted the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners," Richard's resonant voice boomed through the state-of-the-art sound system, carrying a practiced cadence of false humility. "For decades, the Vance Foundation has stood as a beacon of integrity, community support, and unwavering ethical standards..."

I gripped the tray of champagne flutes so tightly my knuckles turned white. Every word he spoke about integrity was a calculated lie built on the backs of silenced workers, coerced debtors, and broken lives. Around the room, wealthy donors and city officials nodded appreciatively, clapping their hands in rhythmic waves of applause. They saw only the philanthropy, the high-society glamour, and the formidable Vance name. They had no idea what happened behind the locked doors of the East Wing, or how many domestic staff members had signed nondisclosure agreements under the threat of financial ruin.

Across the crowded room, past a sea of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos, my eyes locked onto Julian. He stood near the grand French doors leading to the terrace, wearing his sharp black suit, refusing to participate in the applause. He wasn't looking at his uncle; his gaze was fixed entirely on me. There was no warmth in his expression, only a dark, simmering intensity—a silent promise that the countdown had begun. He gave a single, imperceptible nod of his head, his hand resting inside his jacket pocket where his phone was set to receive the signal.

My breath hitched. The federal investigators we had secretly coordinated with through Arthur's legal contacts were scheduled to arrive at nine o'clock sharp. We had less than ten minutes.

Moving with practiced invisibility, I wove through the moving crowd, offering champagne to board members and local politicians who didn't give me a second glance. To them, I was just part of the scenery, a blonde maid in a crisp uniform whose only purpose was to keep their glasses full. None of them noticed the slight bulk in my apron pocket where the white cloth rested, holding the digital proof of their host's corruption.

As the clock on the grand marble mantelpiece ticked toward the top of the hour, a sudden commotion rippled through the front entrance foyer. Low murmurs spread through the guests closest to the doors, followed by the sharp, authoritative click of heavy leather boots against the polished marble floor.

Four men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing federal insignia swept past the bewildered security guards at the main entrance, bypassing the guest list entirely. The lead investigator, a tall woman with sharp eyes and a federal badge held high, strode directly down the central aisle toward the stage, ignoring the gasps of the startled socialites.

Richard stopped mid-sentence, his smile freezing on his face as he squinted into the glare of the spotlights. "Excuse me? This is a private charity event—"

"Richard Vance," the lead federal agent called out, her voice cutting cleanly through the silenced ballroom. "You're under arrest for corporate fraud, interstate extortion, and systematic intimidation of witnesses."

Panic erupted across the room like a struck match. Gents stood up abruptly, champagne flutes clattering to the floor, while whispers and camera flashes exploded from every corner. Richard's face drained of color, turning a sickly, mottled gray. For a split second, he looked trapped, cornered like a rat in the very empire he had built on intimidation.

Then, his eyes darted through the crowd, landing directly on me standing near the service pillar. A desperate, malicious light flashed in his eyes.
