Chapter 6: The Marble Kitchen Showdown

The morning sun cast long, sharp angles across the white marble countertops of the grand kitchen, but the warmth of the spring morning failed to pierce the freezing tension in the room. The staff had been summoned at six sharp for a mandatory operational briefing—an unheard-of decree issued by Richard Vance himself before the sun had even fully cleared the estate gates.

Richard stood at the head of the marble island, leaning heavily on his gold-handled cane. His silver hair was meticulously combed, his tailored charcoal suit unwrinkled, but the bags under his eyes betrayed a restless, paranoid night. Around him stood twelve terrified housemaids, butlers, and kitchen staff, all staring fixedly at the floor tiles.

“I have received credible reports of internal theft and unauthorized data access within this estate,” Richard announced, his voice echoing off the gleaming stone walls like dry branches snapping. “Let me be entirely clear. Anyone found fraternizing with outside investigators, or harboring documents belonging to the Vance Corporation, will be terminated immediately, blacklisted from every domestic agency in the country, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Two younger maids near the back began to quietly weep, whispering among themselves in panic. One of them, a girl from the village whose brother worked maintenance, dropped her cleaning cloth and bolted for the service exit, resigning on the spot rather than face Richard's wrath.

Richard didn't even blink at her departure. Instead, his cold, calculating gaze locked directly onto me. He stepped around the island, his cane clicking rhythmically against the floor, stopping just a foot away from where I stood by the sink holding the pristine white cloth.

“Clara,” Richard purred, his voice dropping into a venomous hiss meant only for my ears. “You've been spending a great deal of time wandering the upper corridors after hours. Rumor has it you think you have protection under this roof. Let me remind you what happens to insolent girls who forget their place.”

He raised his hand, his fingers curling into a fist as if to repeat the exact abuse from three weeks ago, testing my endurance in front of the entire terrified staff.

Before his knuckles could even twitch forward, a sharp, metallic slam echoed through the kitchen.

Julian strode through the double doors from the main hall, his face carved from granite. He didn't shout, but his presence filled the cavernous room instantly, suffocating Richard's momentum. Julian stepped directly between his uncle and me, placing his towering frame as an impenetrable shield between us.

“Touch her again, Richard,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying the weight of a loaded gun, “and I will personally strip you of your board seat before the sun sets today.”

Richard's face flushed a mottled, furious purple, his grip tightening on his cane until his knuckles turned white. “Julian! Have you lost your mind? Defending a common maid over family honor?”

“She isn't just a maid, Richard,” Julian replied, turning slightly to look down at me with a steady, grounding gaze, while his hand slid subtly toward the edge of the marble counter where my fingers rested on the white cloth. “She's a witness. And as of this morning, she's a partner in rebuilding everything you've corrupted.”

The silence in the white marble kitchen was absolute. The staff looked up, fear slowly giving way to a dawning, fragile spark of hope. The war for the estate had finally broken out into the open, and there was no turning back.
