Chapter 7: The Mask of Glamour

Night fell over the city like a heavy velvet curtain, swallowing the sprawling lawns of the estate and casting the grand ballroom in a shimmering, deceptive glow. Tonight was the annual charity foundation gala, an event designed to project untouchable philanthropy and elite stability to the outside world. Chandeliers blazed with thousands of crystals, reflecting off the polished marble floors where wealthy guests in designer gowns and sharp tuxedos mingled, sipping champagne and laughing on cue. It was a masterpiece of public theater, orchestrated to hide the rot eating away at the foundation of Vincent’s empire.

I stood quietly on the grand staircase, hidden behind a towering decorative urn filled with white lilies, watching the glittering crowd below. Isabella moved among the guests like a phantom trapped in her own silk dress, her diamond necklace flashing under the harsh lights, though her smile didn't reach her eyes. Every time someone mentioned Vincent’s name, her hand instinctively flew to her throat, clutching the jewels as if they were a lifeline. She was terrified—not just of the police or the authorities, but of the man she had lived beside for years, a man whose patience was wearing dangerously thin.

Vincent stood near the far set of French doors, wearing a crisp black button-up shirt that contrasted sharply with the tailored suits around him. He looked like a predator caged in a gilded pen, his dark eyes scanning the room with cold, calculating detachment. He hadn't touched a drop of alcohol all evening. Instead, he kept his weight shifted to his back foot, ready to move at a second's notice. As I watched from the shadows, a masked courier slipped through the side entrance, moving through the sea of oblivious socialites with practiced stealth until he reached Vincent's side, pressing a thick, leather-bound physical ledger into his open palm before disappearing back into the crowd.

Vincent didn't open the book immediately. He simply closed his fist around the leather binding, his knuckles turning stark white as his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his scruffy cheek. He raised his gaze slowly, scanning the balcony until his eyes locked directly onto mine through the fronds of the lilies. There was no anger in his look this time—only a heavy, unspoken understanding that the final act of this elaborate charade was about to begin. The guests continued to sip their champagne, entirely unaware that the floor beneath their expensive shoes was about to crack wide open.
