Chapter 10: Common Ground

The afternoon shadows lengthened across the sprawling estate as I crouched near the edge of the stone courtyard, my breath coming in ragged gasps that echoed in the quiet air. The heavy oak door behind me swung open smoothly on well-oiled hinges, and Vincent stepped out into the cool evening breeze, his dark sleeves still rolled up past his forearms, his eyes sharp and analytical as he scanned the manicured grounds. When he spotted me hiding near the mossy stone fountain, his tense, guarded posture relaxed just a fraction. He walked over slowly, his heavy boots crunching softly on the gravel, and crouched down to my eye level so he didn't loom over me, completely ignoring the damp earth staining the expensive fabric of his black trousers.
"Are you alright?" Vincent asked quietly, his voice carrying an unusual gentleness that seemed entirely at odds with his dangerous, calculated reputation within the underworld. I nodded slowly, wiping a smudge of dark garden dirt from my cheek with the fraying sleeve of my faded blue sweater. "Dominic tried to find the flash drive in the greenhouse," I whispered, glancing back nervously toward the dark shadows of the gardens where Grace had made her stand. "Grace stopped him, but he looked... he looked like he didn't have anything left to lose, Vincent." Vincent's jaw tightened instantly, a hard muscle ticking rhythmically in his scruffy cheek as a dark, dangerous promise formed in the depths of his dark eyes.
"Grace is safe in the East Wing with guards I personally trust," Vincent said, standing up and offering me his large, calloused hand. I took it without a moment's hesitation, feeling the solid, reassuring strength in his grip grounding me against the swirling chaos. "And Dominic won't be bothering anyone much longer. He thought he was playing a high-stakes game of chess, but he completely forgot who built the board." We walked together in silence back toward the grand mansion, the massive doors standing open as if welcoming us into the final confrontation. For the first time since my mother's voice had echoed from the cracked smartphone screen, the heavy fog of fear began to lift from my chest, replaced by a quiet, shared determination to bring every hidden truth out into the light once and for all.
