Chapter 5: Confession by Moonlight

The kitchen pantry was small, smelling faintly of roasted coffee beans, silver polish, and old flour, but the heavy oak door and the steel deadbolt provided a tangible barrier against the storm raging through the rest of the mansion. Grace sat on a low wooden crate beside me, her chest heaving as she pulled a crumpled linen handkerchief from her apron pocket to dab at the cold sweat on her forehead. Outside our narrow, barred high window, the pale silver light of a rising half-moon cut across the slate patio, casting long, skeletal shadows of the oak trees against the glass. We could hear the faint, muffled sounds of shouting drifting down from the upper gallery—Dominic’s shrill, panicked voice arguing with Isabella’s desperate pleas, punctuated by the heavy, deliberate thud of Vincent’s boots pacing the hardwood floor above us.

"He's going to tear the whole place apart brick by brick," Grace whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched my hand in her rough, warm grip. "Vincent loved her more than the empire, more than the money, more than his own life. When Dominic and Isabella convinced him she ran off with another man four years ago, something inside him simply died. He turned into iron. But now... now that he knows she was silenced right here under our feet..." She didn't finish the sentence, but the implication hung heavy in the stale air between us. We both knew that the fragile web of lies keeping the syndicate afloat had just snapped, and anyone who had a hand in weaving it was about to face a reckoning that no amount of wealth or political influence could stop.

Suddenly, the heavy thumping of footsteps outside our door stopped. The metal deadbolt rattled violently as someone tried to force the handle, followed by the sound of Dominic’s frantic breathing pressed against the thick oak. "Open this door right now!" Dominic hissed through the wood, his voice cracking with unmasked hysteria. "If you think you can hide in there while I burn your little evidence to ash, you're out of your mind! Open it or I swear I'll take a crowbar to these hinges!" Grace froze, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at me, her body positioning itself defensively in front of my small frame. But before Dominic could strike the wood again, a second set of heavy, unhurried footsteps echoed down the stone corridor—footsteps we would recognize anywhere in this house.

"Step away from the door, Dominic," Vincent’s voice cut through the hallway like a blade of ice. There was a brief, stunned silence outside, followed by the sound of Dominic scrambling backward against the wall. "Vincent—listen to me, I can explain everything, the books, the accounts, Isabella made us—" Dominic stammered, his bravado entirely evaporated. A dull thud echoed through the pantry, the sound of a fist connecting solidly with a jaw, followed by Dominic gasping for air as he hit the floorboards. Then the key slid smoothly into the pantry lock from the outside. The deadbolt turned with a heavy clack, and the door swung open to reveal Vincent standing in the pale moonlight, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his knuckles bruised and bleeding, staring down at us with eyes that burned with a terrible, unbearable clarity.
