Chapter 14: Restoring the Foundation

With Ethan gone, the cavernous estate finally felt like a home rather than a gilded cage. The staff he had hired to monitor every movement and report back on our daily habits were replaced with people we trusted—warm, professional individuals who treated Maisie with genuine affection and respect.
Elena and I spent the crisp autumn afternoons redecorating the west wing of the house, turning what had once been Ethan’s austere private study into an open, sunlit playroom for Maisie and a drafting studio for Elena’s ongoing laboratory designs. The heavy velvet drapes that had blocked out the natural light were replaced with sheer linen, letting the golden New England sunlight flood every corner of the room.
Arthur Vance stopped by on a Friday afternoon to finalize the remaining property transfers. He set a neat stack of signed deeds and corporate dissolution documents on the kitchen counter, looking exceptionally pleased with the morning's proceedings.
"The asset recovery is proceeding faster than expected," Arthur explained, accepting a cup of tea from Elena. "Ethan’s offshore accounts have been fully repatriated, and the court has ordered the immediate return of the patent licensing royalties to Elena’s primary estate."
"And Ethan himself?" I asked, leaning against the counter.
"He’s relocated to a modest apartment downtown," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. "He resigned from the bar association voluntarily to avoid disbarment proceedings. Without his status and his network, he’s effectively invisible. The corporate world has a very short memory for men who lose everything."
"It’s a tragedy of his own making," Elena murmured, looking out the window toward the rolling lawn. "Greed is a cage of one's own construction."
After Arthur left, Maisie toddled into the kitchen clutching a wooden puzzle piece, her bright blue eyes wide with concentration. She wobbled on her feet, let out a joyful little squeal, and managed to fit the piece into the correct slot on the table.

"Look, Mommy! I did it!" she crowed, clapping her hands together.
I scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her soft curls as she giggled against my shoulder. "You're so smart, my sweet girl," I whispered, holding her tight. Elena walked over, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Maisie’s forehead, smiling warmly as the little girl reached out to grab her finger. The broken pieces of our lives had been gathered, examined, and put back together into something stronger, truer, and entirely unbreakable.
