Chapter 12: The Ultimatum

The heavy oak front door swung open with a resounding crash at precisely seven o'clock in the evening. Ethan stood on the threshold, his navy suit jacket unbuttoned, his face pale and slick with sweat, his eyes wild and bloodshot. The poised, immaculate corporate attorney had entirely vanished, replaced by a man cornered by his own deception.

"Where is she?" Ethan demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling of the foyer as he strode past me without a second glance. "Clara! Don't play games with me. Where are the files?"

I stood near the living room archway, my arms folded across my chest, keeping my breathing slow and deliberate. Elena stepped out from the library, holding a cup of tea, her demeanor utterly calm as she watched him unravel.

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, his gaze snapping from me to Elena. For a moment, his mouth opened as if to speak, but no words came out. The realization that his two worlds had not only collided, but completely united against him, hit him with visible physical force.

"You," Ethan hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he took a step toward Elena. "You orchestrated this. You used Clara to dig through my private archives."

"I used nothing that didn't legally belong to me, Ethan," Elena replied, her tone level and unyielding. "You stole my father's life work, you forged my signature on the asset transfer, and you tried to erase me from existence. The federal marshals are already auditing your primary accounts. It’s over."

Ethan laughed—a harsh, manic sound that held no humor. "You think a few frozen accounts can bring down my firm? I have partners who will bury this in motions for the next ten years. You won't see a dime."

"You underestimate the strength of the evidence Arthur Vance compiled," I said, stepping forward so he was forced to look at me, really look at me, not as a submissive wife he could manage, but as an equal adversary. "The forged psychiatric evaluations you used to discredit Elena? The offshore tax evasion documents? They're already on the desk of the district attorney."

Ethan stared at me, his chest heaving beneath his white dress shirt. The arrogance that had sustained him for over a decade crumbled, leaving behind a cold, pathetic desperation. He reached into his coat pocket as if searching for a phone, his fingers trembling uncontrollably.

"You're destroying our family," he whispered, playing his last, pathetic card. "Think of Maisie. What kind of life will she have when her father is ruined?"

May you like

"A honest one," I answered steadily, my voice carrying zero hesitation. "Which is more than you ever gave her."

He stood in the hallway for a long, silent moment, realizing that every manipulation had failed, every threat was toothless, and every exit was blocked. Without another word, he turned on his heel, walked out the front door, and slammed it behind him into the autumn night.
