Chapter 11: The Subpoena

Arthur Vance sat at the kitchen island, his briefcase resting open beside a steaming mug of black coffee. The autumn light slanted through the high windows, illuminating dust motes that danced lazily above the marble counter. Elena sat opposite him, her fingers tracing the rim of her own mug, while I paced quietly near the sink, listening to the soft rustle of paper as Arthur turned the stiff sheets of the federal subpoena.

"The document trail is remarkably clean," Arthur murmured, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Ethan used a series of shell LLCs registered in Delaware to funnel the patent licensing fees away from Elena’s estate and into personal accounts managed by his firm’s offshore division. It took us weeks to untangle, but the signature on the assignment transfer is unmistakably his."

Elena raised her chin, her expression hardening with a quiet, resolute fury. "He always believed he was untouchable. He assumed that because my father passed away without leaving a clear corporate successor, the laboratory and all its assets defaulted to whatever paperwork he chose to file."

"He miscalculated," Arthur replied, looking up at me with calm reassurance. "He never expected you to survive the financial fallout, Clara, nor did he expect Elena to return with legal standing. The federal prosecutor’s office has already accepted our filing. They will serve him with the asset-freeze order tomorrow morning during the partners' quarterly meeting."

My stomach tightened at the thought of Ethan’s reaction. For years, his entire identity had been anchored to his unblemished professional reputation, his corner office on the forty-second floor, and the illusion of absolute control. To have that structure dismantled publicly was a risk that terrified me, not because I felt any lingering loyalty to him, but because wounded predators lash out.

"Will he try to liquidate the estate accounts before the freeze takes effect?" I asked, stopping my pacing to lean against the edge of the counter.

"We anticipated that," Arthur said, tapping the corner of a green folder. "The court granted an emergency injunction yesterday afternoon. Every bank account, investment portfolio, and real estate holding registered under his primary social security number is locked as of midnight. He cannot move a single dollar."

"Good," Elena said softly, her voice devoid of triumph, carrying only the weight of long-delayed justice. "Let him feel what it’s like to have the ground pulled out from under him."

We spent the next hour reviewing the timeline for the upcoming civil deposition and coordinating with the local police precinct to ensure our security at the estate remained uncompromised. When Arthur finally packed his briefcase and walked out to his sedan, the house grew still again. Maisie woke from her nap upstairs, her sweet, sleepy voice calling out for me down the hallway. I hurried up the stairs, my heart lighter than it had been in years, ready to face whatever storm Ethan was about to bring to our doorstep.
