Chapter 13: The Sub-Panel Breach

The air grew noticeably colder and damper the deeper I descended into the estate's subterranean service corridors. Stripped of the polished mahogany and crystal chandeliers of the upper floors, this was the underbelly of the empire—gray concrete walls, exposed copper piping, and the low, heavy hum of the central HVAC system.
Ahead of me, the heavy fire door leading to the server annex stood ajar. A sliver of harsh fluorescent light spilled out onto the concrete floor, accompanied by the rapid, frantic clicking of mechanical keyboard keys. Clara’s voice echoed down the hall, sharp and commanding.
“Faster! If the local archive isn't wiped before the federal mirror syncs at midnight, we’re all going down,” she barked at someone inside the room.
I crept forward, hugging the rough concrete wall until I reached the recessed metal door housing the master electrical sub-panel. My fingers brushed the cold steel handle. It was locked with a standard thumb-turn latch that had never been upgraded—an oversight by Clara’s high-priced security team, who never imagined anyone would dare tamper with the estate’s power grid from the inside.
I gripped the latch, turned it slowly until it clicked open, and threw the heavy metal door wide. Rows of black circuit switches stared back at me, labeled in faded marker. I scanned the rows until I found the red-tagged master breaker for the East Wing server rack.
Without hesitation, I reached out and hauled the heavy lever down with both hands.
A loud, metallic thunk echoed through the corridor. Instantly, the harsh fluorescent hum died. Darkness swallowed the hallway, followed immediately by the abrupt, frustrated curses of Clara and her technician from inside the server room as their monitors flickered black and shut down mid-wipe.

Before Clara could step out into the hallway to investigate the sudden outage, heavy footsteps echoed from the opposite end of the corridor. A beam of sharp white light cut through the gloom.
“It’s over, Clara,” Julian’s voice rang out, cold, steady, and filled with absolute finality as he stepped around the corner, flashlight in one hand and the secure flash drive gleaming in the other.
