Chapter 12: The Digital Vault

I waited until Clara stormed out of the study, her heels clacking furiously down the hall toward the private server room in the east wing, before slipping out from behind the drapes. The air in the room still carried the faint scent of her expensive perfume mixed with the sharp tang of panic. There was no time to lose. Clara was racing to wipe the physical and digital evidence that could finally expose her years of financial sabotage and emotional manipulation.
I hurried out of the study, keeping close to the shadowed wall of the sprawling corridor. Downstairs, the muffled commotion of guards shouting near the service entrance signaled that Julian had intercepted Marcus and secured the backup flash drive. But Clara’s tech team was operating from the inside, barricaded in the basement terminal hub.
As I reached the grand staircase, my phone vibrated sharply in my apron pocket—a prepaid burner Marcus had handed me hours ago. I flipped it open with a trembling thumb.
“Isabella, it’s Marcus,” his voice came through, strained and urgent over the static. “Julian and I made it past the outer gate guards, but Clara’s IT contractor has initiated a remote wipe of the main estate terminal. If they clear the database, every payroll discrepancy, every forged signature, and every property transfer goes up in smoke. You need to pull the master circuit breaker in the basement sub-panel before they hit the execute command.”
“The basement sub-panel?” I whispered, keeping my eyes fixed on the security camera mounted above the archway, making sure to stay in its blind spot. “That’s right next to the server room where Clara just headed. She’s probably guarding it herself.”

“I know,” Marcus said grimly. “Julian is holding off her head of security by the courtyard, but he doesn't know she’s inside the house. You’re the only one close enough to reach the breaker box in time. Do it now, Isabella, or all of this was for nothing.”
The line went dead with a soft click. I stared down at the dark, polished marble steps leading into the lower levels of the mansion. The glamorous facade of the estate was entirely gone now, stripped down to its bare, brutal mechanics. I took a deep breath, adjusted the collar of my black maid dress, and began the long descent into the dark.
