Chapter 10: The Unraveling Web

Julian stood motionless beside the mahogany desk, the rustle of the forged bank statements sounding deafening in the expansive study. His knuckles pressed hard against the wood, turning white as the full weight of Clara’s deception settled over him. For five years, he had believed himself the master of his domain, steering a multi-million-dollar empire with ruthless efficiency. Yet, right here in his private sanctuary, a vast network of embezzlement and domestic exile had been constructed beneath his nose. He looked down at the ledger, his jaw tightening into a hard line of cold anger.
“She didn't just push you out tonight, Isabella,” Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper, though it hummed with repressed fury. “She’s been systematically erasing everyone who ever knew the truth about us. Marcus told you about the server logs? We need to secure them before her legal team catches wind of this.”
I kept my distance, respecting the heavy perimeter of his realization while holding my ground. The storm outside lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, mirroring the turbulence inside the room. “Marcus already downloaded the secure archives to a flash drive, but he’s still down by the service gate,” I replied, my voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking through my veins. “Clara has security on high alert. If they catch him with those backups, they’ll confiscate everything and claim it was a routine property sweep.”
Julian didn't hesitate. He reached into his tailored waistcoat and pulled out a heavy master key ring—the one Clara had convinced him to hand over to her head of security months ago under the guise of modernization. He flicked the brass ring off the hook, his dark eyes sharp with a dangerous clarity I hadn't seen since the days before the estate swallowed me whole.

“She wanted absolute control,” Julian muttered, striding toward the heavy oak doors. “Let’s see how she handles losing it. Stay here, Isabella. Lock this door from the inside. I’m going down to the service gate myself.”
Before I could protest, he vanished into the dim corridor, his footsteps fading rapidly down the grand staircase. I stood alone in the quiet study, my gaze drifting back to the small gold button resting on the blotter. It was a tangible anchor in a world built on quicksand. I knew Clara would return from her inspection of the lower terrace soon, and when she found out Julian was missing from his usual rounds, the fragile peace of the estate would shatter entirely. I took a deep breath, gripped the edge of the desk, and prepared for the inevitable confrontation that lay ahead.
