Chapter 2: Echoes in the Study

The silence that followed Evan’s revelation felt heavier than the marble pillars supporting the portico. Vanessa staggered backward, her high heel catching slightly on the slate paving, her manicured hand flying to her mouth as if she had just seen a ghost walk out of a freshly dug grave. Victoria—who had been watching from the French doors with her iced tea untouched—froze, her aristocratic facade cracking down the middle like cheap porcelain.

I didn't wait for them to recover their footing. While Evan held their collective gaze, I slipped past the trailing ivy and pushed open the heavy mahogany doors leading back into the manor’s grand study. The room smelled of aged leather, floor wax, and the distinct, expensive cologne of a man who thought he had permanently inherited a stolen life.

My pulse hammered against my ribs, but my hands remained steady. I walked straight to the antique oak desk, the place where Evan had once signed documents he thought were routine partnership papers. Back then, I had been his chief legal assistant before Vanessa engineered my demotion, my banishment, and eventually our quiet disappearance behind the servant entrance under an assumed name. They thought breaking my spirit would keep the truth buried. They were desperately wrong.

I knelt beside the lower mahogany panel of the desk, sliding my fingernail along the wood grain until I found the tiny brass release pin Evan had installed the year Sophie was born. It clicked open with a soft, familiar sound, revealing the hidden compartment. Inside sat the original, unredacted corporate deeds and the genuine last will and testament that proved Evan’s signature on the asset-transfer papers had been forged by Victoria’s own hand.

“Found it,” I murmured softly to myself, pulling the heavy manila folder into the dim light of the study.

The door creaked open behind me. I didn't turn around immediately; I simply tucked the folder beneath the front of my purple and white maid’s apron, smoothing the white fabric flat against my skirt. When I finally pivoted on my heel, Vanessa stood in the doorway, her chest rising and falling beneath her pink dress, her eyes wild with a desperate, trapped-animal fury.

“You’re nothing,” Vanessa hissed, taking a slow step toward me. “A glorified maid playing detective. Victoria will have you thrown out of here before the police even reach the private gates.”

“Try it,” I replied, my voice chillingly calm as I met her gaze head-on. “Every security camera in this hallway has been recording audio since noon. And outside? Evan has the state troopers waiting at the main gate with a federal warrant.”
