Chapter 15: Roots And Sunlight
The next morning, the crisp autumn air carried the sharp, earthy scent of damp soil and falling leaves. True to our promise, Evan and I walked out to the east lawn just past the edge of the rose gardens, carrying a sturdy young white oak sapling in a wooden tub. Sophie trotted closely beside us, clutching her stuffed white bunny under one arm while proudly holding a bright red plastic garden shovel in her other hand.
“Are you ready to plant our tree, Sophie?” Evan asked, setting the heavy tub down on the grass.
“I was born ready!” she declared with a bright, infectious laugh that echoed across the quiet grounds.
Together, we kneeled in the dirt. Evan used a larger spade to break open the soft earth, while Sophie eagerly scooped out small mounds of soil with her little shovel, her white dress getting slightly smudged with rich brown dirt—a glorious, normal kind of mess that no one would ever scold her for. I helped steady the sapling's delicate trunk, making sure its roots were tucked safely and deeply into the ground where they belonged.
As we packed the final layer of earth around the base of the trunk, I looked up and saw Evan watching me with a look of profound, quiet devotion. The road we had traveled to get to this exact moment had been perilous and steep, marked by betrayal, disguise, and the terrifying risk of losing everything we loved. But looking at our daughter, her face flushed with healthy color and genuine joy, I knew every sacrifice had been worth it. We hadn't just reclaimed a house; we had reclaimed our future.
“There,” Sophie said, wiping her dirty hands on her skirt and patting the soil firmly. “Now it’ll grow as big and strong as this house.”
