Chapter 6: First Steps into the Light

Spring arrived in the Hudson Valley, melting the winter snow into rushing mountain streams and covering the forest floor with carpets of wild bluebells.

For Lily’s seventh birthday, Katherine did not host a grandiose society banquet. Instead, she organized a simple, joyous afternoon in the cottage’s sunlit backyard.

Mrs. Higgins baked a three-layer vanilla sponge cake topped with fresh raspberries, and Arthur arrived carrying a large cardboard box with air holes punched into the top.

"Happy birthday, young lady," Arthur smiled warmly, placing the box on the wooden picnic table.

Lily tilted her head curiously, peeking over the rim. A small, golden-furred puppy with floppy ears and a white-tipped tail peeked back at her, letting out an excited, squeaky bark before licking her nose.

Lily let out a ringing, melodious laugh—a sound so pure and unrestrained that Katherine felt tears of joy well in her eyes.

"Is he... is he really mine, Mommy?" Lily asked, lifting the puppy gently into her arms.

"He’s yours, sweetheart," Katherine smiled, stroking the puppy’s soft fur. "His name is Toby, and his only job in this world is to play with you and keep you safe."

For the rest of the afternoon, Lily ran across the expansive green meadow with Toby bounding at her heels. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her bare feet kicking up dewdrops from the grass, completely free from the shadows of the past. Watching her daughter run toward the sunlight, Katherine knew that the heavy iron chains had finally lost their power forever.
