Chapter 15: Where the Sunflowers Bloom

Five years later, the morning sun rose over the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, casting a golden glow across a five-acre field of blooming yellow sunflowers.
Eleven-year-old Lily Sinclair stood at an easel set up in the middle of the meadow, her blonde hair caught in a gentle summer breeze. She was tall, healthy, and radiant, her hazel eyes bright with intelligence and boundless empathy.
Beside her, Toby—now a large, gentle golden dog with silver whiskers around his muzzle—lay happily in the warm grass, gnawing lazily on a stick.
"Mommy, come look!" Lily called out, waving a paintbrush in the air.
Katherine walked through the rows of sunflowers, carrying a basket of freshly picked strawberries. She wore a simple white linen dress, her face relaxed and glowing with the deep contentment of a mother whose life’s work had borne beautiful fruit.
Katherine looked at the canvas. It was a stunning, mature landscape of the open valley, capturing the sunrise bursting over the hills, with no fences, no gates, and no shadows in sight.
"It’s breathtaking, Lily," Katherine said, wrapping an arm around her daughter’s shoulders.
Lily leaned her head against Katherine’s shoulder, looking out over the open land where children from the summer camp were laughing in the distance.
"Thank you, Mommy," Lily whispered softly.
"For what, sweetheart?"

"For breaking the chains," Lily replied, looking up with eyes full of everlasting love. "For teaching me that I was always worthy of the light."
Katherine held her daughter close as the morning breeze rustled the golden sunflowers around them. The dark night at the iron gate had vanished into memory, replaced forever by a dawn that would never fade.
