Chapter 10: The First Counter-Move

By dawn, the mist had burned off to reveal a pale, unyielding morning sun that cut sharply across the interstate. I was parked three miles away from the diner, sitting at a scenic overlook that peered down over the sprawling, manicured lawns of the municipal courthouse. My fingers danced lightly across the keypad of the prepaid phone, drafting a reply to Ryan's third frantic text message since midnight.

His previous messages had shifted rapidly from arrogant commands to stunned disbelief, and finally, to outright panic. Lisa, where are you? Mother is furious. We can talk about whatever settlement you think you're entitled to. Just pick up the phone. He still believed everything had a price tag, still assumed that a larger alimony check or a quiet transfer of title deeds could sweep decades of coercion and federal corruption back under the Persian rug of the family estate.

I didn't offer him money, and I didn't offer him forgiveness. Instead, I attached a fifteen-second unedited clip of Evelyn’s voice discussing the magistrate's bribe directly to the chat window, followed by a simple, unyielding sentence: Your grandfather’s medals won't cover bail, Ryan. Tell Evelyn to prepare her statement for the federal investigators.

I hit send before the signal could bounce, watching the little checkmark turn solid on the screen. Almost instantly, my phone began to vibrate violently in my palm as Ryan tried to call the burner number directly. I let it ring, listening to the monotonous, rhythmic buzzing against the dashboard until the voicemail picked up. Then, with a calm, deliberate motion, I popped the plastic back off the burner phone, pulled out the SIM card, and dropped it into my coffee cup.

The silence that followed was absolute. Out on the highway, transport trucks roared past toward the state line, carrying ordinary commuters to ordinary jobs where no one had to fear a ceremonial baton or a magistrate's gavel. I shifted the car into drive, my foot pressing smoothly on the gas pedal. The first phase of the unravelling was complete; now, it was time to let the law take its course in the open air.
