Chapter 5: Closing the Net

The digital monitors in the estate's subterranean security hub glowed with lines of green code and streaming server logs, casting an eerie emerald hue across the stainless-steel countertops and the banks of high-end servers. The digital clock on the reinforced concrete wall read 2:14 AM, the quiet of the night broken only by the low, steady hum of cooling fans. Matteo stood over the main console, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced precision as he tracked an unauthorized data ping hitting our external firewall from an IP address routed through the municipal police precinct downtown.

"Got him," Matteo muttered, his dark eyes narrowing as he pointed to a flashing red node on the regional map display. "Someone inside the department is trying to access our encrypted archive directories using a back-door protocol. They're looking specifically for the security footage from the East Wing—the exact hallway where Kate was cornered."

I crossed my arms, staring at the incoming packets as they attempted to brute-force their way through our secondary defenses. "Let them in," I said, stepping closer to the monitor and watching the trace routing data scroll past in real-time. "Just open a mirrored sandbox partition. Let them think they're pulling the real files, while Aaron traces the physical hardware routing the request."

Within minutes, the secondary monitor blinked green as a secure burner phone connected to the sandbox session received a massive data dump of corrupted dummy files designed to look authentic. Matteo tracked the signal triangulation instantly, his finger tapping the screen with quiet satisfaction. "Apartment 4B, Grandview Terrace. Three blocks from the precinct annex. The device belongs to Detective Sergeant Miller—one of Caldwell's regular fixers inside the local judiciary."

"Aaron, Matteo," I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the servers with absolute authority. "Bring the mobile containment unit and the physical evidence packets containing Dr. Reeves's medical reports and the witness depositions. We're going to pay Detective Miller a visit before he has time to report back to Caldwell that his download failed."

As we rolled out into the damp, predestined streets of the city in the black armored SUV, the heavy weight of the past forty-eight hours seemed to lift, replaced by the cold, precise momentum of an unavoidable reckoning. Caldwell had spent years hiding behind his wealth, his political clout, and his purchased silence, believing his badge-wearing cronies could make any inconvenient truth disappear overnight. But the foundation of his empire was built on glass, and tonight, the first stone was about to break.
