Chapter 11: The Subpoena Delivery

The morning air outside the county courthouse carried the sharp, damp chill of late autumn. Frost coated the manicured lawns and clung to the wrought-iron fence lines that bordered the administrative plaza. I sat inside the matte-black town car, my gaze fixed on the heavy double doors of the municipal records annex where Preston Caldwell’s legal team was currently attempting to file an emergency motion for a change of venue. They knew the local jury pool was entirely compromised by the revelations of the past week, and they were scrambling to find a sympathetic judge in an adjoining district.

Matteo shifted in the driver’s seat, glancing up from his encrypted tablet. "Aaron just confirmed the process server served Caldwell’s lead counsel three minutes ago. No evasions this time. The federal magistrate signed off on the expanded indictment, adding witness tampering and financial intimidation to the original charges of assault and municipal corruption."

"Good," I murmured, my eyes narrowing as I watched a pair of local reporters rush toward the courthouse steps, their camera lights flashing against the gray brick facade. "Caldwell thought he could handle this like a routine zoning dispute, trading favors and silencing witnesses with a handshake and a quiet check. He didn't understand that once a secret gets dragged out into the daylight, you can't simply pay the sun to go down."

The contrast between Caldwell’s former public life and his current predicament was absolute. Only a week ago, his face adorned the front pages of every metropolitan daily as a visionary philanthropist opening a new youth center funded by municipal grants. Today, those same newspapers featured mugshots and financial audits detailing how those grants were systematically diverted to pay off non-disclosure agreements signed by abused domestic workers and intimidated estate staff. It was a textbook study in how quickly a fortress built on deception collapses the moment someone refuses to look away.

"Should we head back to the security office, Mr. Vance?" Matteo asked, setting the tablet down on the console. "Dr. Reeves called a moment ago. He finished compiling the consolidated medical affidavits for the federal prosecutor. Every bruised arm, every falsified injury report, and every coerced clinic visit has been cross-referenced with Caldwell’s private appointment schedule."

"Let's go," I replied, pulling my coat tighter against the draft. "We need to ensure the physical evidence archives are securely transferred to the federal marshal's custody before the afternoon hearing begins. Caldwell still has a few loyalists buried deep inside the city police department, and I want zero vulnerabilities in our chain of custody."

As the vehicle pulled away from the curb, I looked back at the courthouse steps. The media circus was only beginning, but the truth was no longer locked behind closed doors or buried beneath the polite silence of high society. The foundation had cracked, and no amount of political machinery could put it back together.
