Chapter 8: The Federal Corridor

The linoleum floor of the federal courthouse corridor clicked sharply under our boots as we moved past the marble columns toward Judge Harrison's chambers. The air inside was dry and smelled of old paper, floor wax, and the quiet, heavy tension of an institution that dealt only in irreversible decisions. Mason flanked our left side, his hand resting casually inside his heavy jacket near his service weapon, while Gabriel walked protectively on my right, his shoulder brushing mine with every stride. We rounded the corner past the clerk's desk just as a heavy oak door swung open, and Julian stepped out into the hallway, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases stuffed with legal filings.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. For a fraction of a second, the polished, untouchable mask slipped from his face, revealing a flash of genuine, unadulterated fury in his pale eyes. He was impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than my entire wardrobe, his silver-streaked hair combed back with military precision. But as his gaze shifted from Gabriel to me, and finally down to the tiny bundle of woolen blankets in my arms, his expression hardened into something cold and predatory.

"Gabriel," Julian said, his voice smooth as glass, carrying that familiar, condescending cadence that had dictated every family dinner for a decade. "I see you've chosen to associate with runaways and criminals. Mother is beside herself with worry. Come back to the estate, let's handle this like civilized adults instead of dragging family business into a public circus."

Gabriel didn't break his stride, stepping directly between Julian and me with a quiet, menacing finality. "The only circus here, Julian, is the one you built with forged medical records and purchased affidavits. Judge Harrison is reviewing the real file right now."

Julian's eyes narrowed, a cold smile touching his thin lips as he glanced toward the end of the hall where two local reporters were being escorted away by security. "You think a judge cares about domestic disputes, little brother? The foundation controls the board, the clinic, and the narrative. By tomorrow morning, the press will report that a fragile, unstable mother fled with an infant during a severe mental health episode. You're destroying your own name for a nobody."

"She is my wife," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet and lethal that Julian actually took half a step back. "And that is my child. The name doesn't mean a damn thing anymore if we keep hiding behind it."

Before Julian could formulate a reply, the heavy mahogany door to Judge Harrison's chambers clicked open, and a young law clerk stepped out into the hallway, holding a thick manila folder bearing the seal of the federal court.

"Mr. Sterling," the clerk called out, looking directly at Gabriel. "The judge is ready for you and Mrs. Sterling. You may enter."
