Chapter 15: The Unbroken Horizon

The sun broke through the heavy cloud cover just as our car turned down the private gravel drive toward our home. The frosted windows of the bedroom where this nightmare had begun now caught the brilliant, golden light of late afternoon, shining clear and bright against the winter landscape.
Mason parked the sedan near the front steps, stepping out to open the door with his customary quiet efficiency. "Perimeter is secure, Mr. Sterling," he said, giving a respectful nod. "Local patrols will maintain the checkpoint at the highway turnoff for the next thirty days, but honestly, nobody from that family has the legal authority or the stomach to come anywhere near this property again."
"Thank you, Mason," Gabriel said, shaking the officer's hand firmly before turning to help me out of the car. "Take the evening off. Join your family. You've earned every hour of it."
I stepped out onto the crisp gravel, holding Eli close against my chest. The six-month-old baby let out a soft yawn, his tiny fingers curling comfortably into the fabric of my white shirt, completely peaceful and unaware of the historic battle we had just fought and won on his behalf. The cold air was crisp and clean, carrying the promise of a quiet, undisturbed evening.
Gabriel walked with me up the wooden steps, his arm wrapped securely around my shoulders. When we reached the front porch, he stopped for a moment, looking out over the snow-dusted lawn toward the tree line where the world opened up without restriction or fear.
"We never have to look back over our shoulders again," Gabriel said, his voice deep and steady, filled with a quiet, profound devotion. "From now on, it's just us."

"Just us," I repeated, smiling as I leaned my head against his shoulder.
We walked through the front door into the warm, sunlit hallway, closing the heavy wooden door behind us against the cold. The past was a locked room we had left permanently behind; the future stretched out before us like an unbroken horizon, bright, quiet, and entirely our own.
