Chapter 11: The Abandoned Cabin

The remote lakeside cabin belonged to my grandfather, a place hidden deep within the pine forests of the northern county where nobody from the corporate board would ever think to look. We arrived well before dawn, the tires of the van crunching softly over frozen pine needles as I pulled it around to the rear of the weathered timber structure. The air here was sharp, smelling heavily of resin, damp earth, and woodsmoke from neighboring chimneys miles away. I killed the engine and sat in the sudden silence for a long moment, listening to the wind sighing through the upper branches of the hemlock trees.

Elena helped a tired Lily out of the back, wrapping a thick wool blanket around her shoulders while Atlas leaped down lightly, immediately beginning a wide perimeter sweep of the cabin's perimeter. The dog's ears twitched at every distant snap of a twig, his powerful muscles bunching and relaxing with tireless vigilance.

Inside, the cabin was dusty and smelled of old cedar and long storage, but the hearth was dry and stocked with split logs. I quickly got a fire going, watching orange flames dance across the dry birch bark and cast warm, flickering light over the worn wooden floorboards.

"Are we safe here, Daddy?" Lily asked softly, sitting on an old woven rug near the hearth with the small white cloth clutched in her small hand.

"We're safe, sweetheart," I said, walking over to kneel beside her and brushing a stray strand of blonde hair from her forehead. "No one knows about this place except us and Atlas."

Elena set down our bags on a rustic pine table and looked at me, her expression grim despite the warmth of the fire. "They won't stop looking, Arthur. Sterling and his board members have the police commissioner and half the county judges in their pocket. If we stay here too long, they'll trace our satellite ping."

"I'm not planning on staying long," I replied, standing up and pulling the leather briefcase from my coat. I laid it on the heavy wooden table and flipped the brass latches open, revealing the neatly stacked financial records, encrypted flash drives, and internal memos I had pulled from the west wing archive. "This documentation is a complete audit trail of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent property seizures, and systematic intimidation spanning five years. If I hand this directly to federal investigators in the state capital, Sterling's entire network collapses before the Friday board vote."

"And if they intercept the transmission before it lands?" Elena asked quietly.

"Then we make sure it has multiple digital drop points," I said, my voice cold and resolute. "I'm going to use the local radio relay tower on Pine Ridge at dawn."
