Chapter 8: The Arrival of the Authorities

The flashbulbs strobed in rapid succession, turning the elegant ballroom into a stark, clinical white. Veronica lunged forward, her manicured nails clawing at the air toward David Miller, but the state troopers moved instantly, stepping between her and the legal files with quiet, professional authority.

"Step back, ma'am," the taller trooper said, his voice flat and unyielding. "Veronica Sterling, you are being detained for questioning regarding financial fraud and child endangerment. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"Get your hands off me!" Veronica screamed, her voice losing all its polished high-society resonance, cracking into raw, desperate panic. She thrashed against the officer's grip, her ivory wedding dress tangling around her polished silver shoes as she was steered backward toward the side exit. "Mother! Father! Do something! Call the governor!"

Her mother, sitting rigid in the second row with a face drained of all color, clutched her pearl necklace so tightly her knuckles turned white. She didn't stand up. She didn't look at her daughter. Instead, she lowered her gaze to her lap, utterly defeated by the sudden collapse of their meticulously constructed illusion.

I stood motionless near the grand piano, watching the woman who had terrorized my daughter being led out into the afternoon sunlight. There was no sense of triumph, only a heavy, profound exhaustion that seemed to settle deep into my bones.

Robert walked over, placing a solid hand on my shoulder. "You did the right thing, Alex. It's over."

"It's just beginning," I replied quietly, looking toward the hallway that led to the east wing. "Sofia is still upstairs. She heard everything."

"I'll go up and sit with her," Robert said, turning immediately toward the stairs. "Take care of the paperwork here. David has the rest of the filings ready for the county judge in an hour."

I nodded, watching my brother disappear up the marble staircase. The guests were beginning to murmur among themselves, hurriedly gathering their coats and slipping out through the side doors, eager to distance themselves from the crumbling empire of the Sterling family. The grand ballroom, once designed to celebrate a union of wealth and power, was now just a vast, empty room filled with scattered glass and broken promises.
