Chapter 7: Facing the Crowd

The crystal chandeliers in the main ballroom cast a brilliant, merciless light over the hundred or so guests who had gathered for what they thought was a private rehearsal dinner. When Veronica and I appeared at the top of the marble landing, the scattered conversations died away into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Cameras flashed from the far side of the room. Several local reporters, tipped off by David Miller’s office and the county clerk, had already slipped past the security gates and positioned themselves near the mahogany bar.
Veronica walked down the center aisle with her head held high, the diamonds at her throat catching the light with every breath. She moved with the practiced grace of a woman who believed her social standing was absolute armor. But as she reached the floor, she noticed the men standing near the exit—two state troopers in crisp uniforms and a federal marshal holding a manila folder.
I stayed a half-step behind her, my eyes scanning the crowd until I spotted my brother, Robert, standing near the grand piano. He gave me a single, firm nod.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent room without the need for a microphone. "Thank you for coming. There will be no wedding today."
A sharp murmur rippled through the rows of folding chairs. Veronica whirled around, her eyes flashing with sudden fury, but before she could speak, I stepped around her and faced the assembly.
"For the past three weeks, I believed I was returning to a home built on trust and family," I continued, my gaze moving steadily over the stunned faces of Veronica's closest friends and business associates. "Instead, I found my four-year-old daughter, Sofia, locked in a walk-in closet, forced to clean silver high heels in a tattered maid apron while her care was neglected and abused."
The silence in the room became absolute. A prominent local developer in the front row dropped his champagne flute; it shattered against the marble floor with a sound like breaking glass.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Veronica shrieked, finally breaking her composure as the cameras began to flash rapidly in our direction. "He's unstable! He's trying to steal my family's estate!"
"The financial records and security logs say otherwise, Veronica," David Miller said calmly, stepping out from the shadows near the entrance and holding up the federal injunction. "Embezzlement of corporate trust funds, intentional child endangerment, and filing fraudulent guardianship documents. The warrants are signed."
