Chapter 9: The Federal Prosecutor's Office

The limestone facade of the federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan rose like a monolithic cliff against the steel-gray morning sky. Inside, the air smelled of floor wax, old paper, and institutional anxiety. Clara, Arthur, and I walked through the security checkpoints without breaking stride, our heels clicking rhythmically against the polished terrazzo floors. Marcus Vance—no relation to my former life, but a bulldog of a federal prosecutor with silvering temples and sharp, intelligent eyes—met us outside his second-floor conference room.
"Morning, Elena. Arthur. Clara," Marcus said, extending a hand as he ushered us into the sunlit room overlooking Foley Square. Spread across the large mahogany conference table were thick binders labeled with red federal classification tags: United States v. Julian Vance – Financial Fraud, Wire Wiretaps, and Interstate Coercion.
"Tell me we have enough," I said, sliding into a leather chair and placing my leather portfolio on the table. My hands were steady, but the adrenaline from the previous night's break-in was still humming through my veins.
Marcus sat down, opening a thick manila folder and sliding a set of freshly printed bank ledgers across the table toward us. "Enough? Elena, what you and Daniel Rourke handed over yesterday blew the lid off a multi-million-dollar shell corporation network. Julian wasn't just skimming from his charitable foundations; he was using donor funds to launder money through offshore accounts in the Caymans. Combined with the testimony from the operative your security caught last night, we have probable cause for immediate arrest."
Clara leaned forward, her face pale but resolute. She rested her hands on the edge of the table, her diamond-less ring finger gleaming under the fluorescent lights. "Can he post bail?" she asked, her voice tight with suppressed fury. "Julian is exceptionally good at manipulating people with money. If he gets out on bond, he will liquidate everything."
"Not this time," Marcus replied firmly, tapping a legal pad with his pen. "The grand jury returned a sealed indictment at 7:00 AM this morning on six counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and criminal endangerment of a minor. Because of the clear threat of flight and the attempted intimidation of witnesses at Arthur's estate last night, I’ve secured a no-bail remand order from the judge. When the marshals pick him up, he stays in federal custody until trial."
Arthur crossed his arms, leaning back in his chair with a grim sense of satisfaction. "Where are they picking him up? His charity gala board meeting?"

"Worse," Marcus smiled faintly. "He’s currently at a private breakfast meeting with his primary institutional investors at the Carlyle Hotel, trying to convince them that the news reports are just a smear campaign. The federal marshals are waiting in the lobby. They'll serve him the papers right in front of his biggest financial backers."
I felt a profound, aching breath leave my chest. For five years, I had lived in the shadow of Julian’s charm and cruelty, hiding my daughter, guarding our lives, and praying for a day when justice wouldn't be something reserved only for the wealthy and powerful. Looking across the table at Clara—who had traded her illusions of high-society perfection for the raw, painful truth—I knew we had finally broken through the armor. Julian Vance was about to discover that the glittering facade he had built was nothing more than a house of cards.
