Chapter 2: The VIP Suite Sanctuary

The private VIP holding suite of the Grandview Hotel offered a stark contrast to the chaos downstairs. Thick velvet drapes muffled the distant murmur of scandalized wedding guests, and the air smelled faintly of lemon polish and expensive bottled water. Arthur set Lily down gently on a plush velvet settee, kneeling before her to adjust the straps of her pink tutu dress.
"You're safe now, sweetheart," Arthur murmured, his voice softening into the gentle tone he reserved only for his granddaughter. He wiped a stray tear from her cheek with a thumb calloused by decades of business and protection. "Grandpa's right here. Nobody is going to bother you."
I paced the length of the Persian rug, my dark blue pantsuit feeling suddenly heavy and restrictive. My hands shook as I gripped my smartphone again, dialing a secure, encrypted number that connected directly to Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, but rather my fiercely loyal corporate attorney and long-time confidant.
"Marcus," I answered the moment the line connected, cutting off his greeting. "It happened. Exactly as we feared. He cornered her in the green room before the ceremony."
Marcus's voice came through the speaker, crisp and steady, anchoring my frayed nerves. "Are you and Lily safe? Where are you?"
"We're in the hotel VIP suite with my father. Arthur stepped in before things escalated physically, but the whole ballroom saw it. Clara saw it too." I glanced over at Lily, who was clutching a small stuffed bear Arthur had retrieved from her diaper bag. "Julian tried to pass it off as an accidental wandering-in, but Lily was terrified. She was shaking uncontrollably."
"Good," Marcus said, the sound of keyboard clicking coming through the line. "The public disruption works in our favor, but we can't rely on local police jurisdiction here—too many of Julian's political donors sit on the municipal board. We need to bypass them entirely."
"What are you saying?" I asked, stopping my pacing to look at my father, who nodded encouragingly.
"We go straight to the federal magistrate in the morning," Marcus instructed, his tone turning clinical and absolute. "We file for an emergency emergency protective custody order based on the prior stalking documentation and the new witness testimony from today. If Julian tried to intimidate Lily to keep her quiet about his financial shell companies, he crossed a line that a simple civil divorce court can't touch. We make it a federal matter of child endangerment and corporate coercion."
"Do it," I said without hesitation. "File whatever it takes. I want a complete freeze on his assets, every account tied to his foundation, and an immediate restraining order that keeps him fifty miles away from my daughter."
"It's going to trigger a media firestorm, Elena," Marcus warned softly. "Julian's public image is bulletproof right now. The press will tear you apart unless we have the hard digital ledger ready to drop the second the papers are served."
"The ledger is secure," I replied, thinking of the hidden cloud drive synced to my phone. "Send Arthur's armored car to the service entrance in twenty minutes. We're getting out of this hotel before Julian's lawyers try to trap us here with a gag order."
"Understood. I'll meet you at your father's estate," Marcus said before the line went dead.

I pocketed the phone and walked over to the settee, sitting beside Lily and pulling her into my lap. She leaned her head against my chest, her heavy eyelids fluttering shut as exhaustion finally overtook the terror. Arthur stood up, walking toward the heavy oak door of the suite and checking the deadbolts.
"The car will be waiting at the basement loading dock, Elena," my father said quietly, his eyes dark with a protective resolve that terrified me just as much as it comforted me. "Julian has played his last card. Now, we play ours."
