Chapter 13: Shattered Facade

Stepping out of the courthouse doors, the afternoon glare hit us instantly, accompanied by a chorus of camera shutters and shouted questions from reporters. The rumor mill had exploded online, linking the emergency custody hearing to Elena’s prominent philanthropic foundation. Flanked by David Vance, I kept my head down, pushing past the throng of microphones and flashing lights. For months, Elena had hidden behind the glittering shield of charity galas, high-society events, and a carefully curated public image of grace and benevolence. Now, as the flashbulbs illuminated her stunned face emerging a few steps behind us, the illusion was publicly unraveling.

We climbed into David’s town car, and the driver pulled smoothly away from the curb, leaving the media circus behind. I let out a long, shuddering breath, staring out the tinted window as the commercial district gave way to quiet suburban streets.

"It’s not over yet," David warned gently, resting his briefcase on his lap as we rode. "She has money, and people with that kind of pride don't go down quietly. She will try to salvage her public reputation. Expect a PR counter-offensive, or an attempt to spin this as a malicious smear campaign."

"Let her try," I said, my voice steady for the first time in days. "The truth is in the medical records. The court saw it."

When we arrived back at Sarah’s house, the tension of the last forty-eight hours seemed to lift the moment I walked through the front door. Sophie was sitting on the living room rug, happily stacking wooden blocks with Sarah while a gentle cartoon played softly on the television. Hearing the door open, the little girl looked up, her blue eyes wide.

"Daddy!" she cried out, scrambling to her feet and running over on steady legs.

I dropped to my knees, catching her in my arms and pulling her tightly against my chest. I buried my face in her soft blonde hair, inhaling her sweet, innocent scent. The red marks on her face and hand were healing, fading day by day under Sarah’s gentle care.

"I've got you, sweetheart," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "We're safe now. Everything is going to be okay."
