Chapter 12: Turning the Tide

The afternoon sun cut sharp, golden diagonals across the courtroom floor as Judge Hernandez reviewed the physical exhibits David had submitted. Every minute felt like an hour. Across the aisle, Elena kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, but I noticed a slight tremor in her right hand as she rested it on the table. Her lead attorney was whispering rapid advice to her, his brow furrowed with growing concern as the weight of the documentation sank in.
David leaned toward me, speaking in a low, steady murmur. "Hold steady. They’re running out of arguments. The medical timeline completely dismantles their claim that the injuries were accidental."
Judge Hernandez cleared his throat, the sound echoing through the quiet chamber. He looked up from the diagnostic reports and photographs, his expression heavy with judicial gravity. "The court has reviewed the pediatric trauma analysis, the photographic evidence of contusions, and the digital logs recovered from the residence. The consistency and location of the injuries preclude the possibility of accidental toddler falls." He paused, his gaze shifting directly to Elena and her legal team. "Furthermore, the respondent’s explanations are wholly inconsistent with the physical facts."
Elena’s lawyer scrambled to his feet, panic edging into his voice. "Your Honor, we request a recess to review these new exhibits—"
"Denied," Judge Hernandez interrupted, his tone final. "Given the immediate and credible threat to the safety of the minor child, Sophie, this court finds sufficient cause to grant the petitioner’s emergency motion."
A wave of profound relief washed over me so fiercely my knees felt weak. I closed my eyes for a brief second, thanking God that Sophie was safe with Sarah, shielded from this nightmare.

"Effective immediately," the judge continued, "temporary sole physical and legal custody is granted to the father, Ethan Brooks. The respondent, Elena Vance, is hereby restrained from coming within five hundred feet of the child, the petitioner, or their temporary residence, pending a full psychological evaluation and formal custody hearing. Court is adjourned."
The gavel struck wood with a sharp crack that signaled the end of the first major battle. Elena’s attorney sat down heavily, while Elena stared blindly ahead, her public mask completely shattered, replaced by a mask of cold, impotent fury.
