Chapter 5: Midnight Decryption

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed midnight, its deep, resonant gongs vibrating through the floorboards of my bedroom. I sat cross-legged on the center of the giant four-poster bed, the heavy velvet drapes drawn tight to block any sliver of light from escaping under the door. I had managed to scrounge an old USB charging cable from the estate's sprawling media room earlier that evening and plugged the heavy black smartphone into a discreet wall outlet behind the bedside table.

For twenty agonizing minutes, the screen remained pitch black. Then, a small white battery icon appeared, pulsing faintly with a red charge bar. I stared at it, willing the device to life, my chest tight. Finally, the Vance corporate logo flashed across the screen, followed by a secure boot sequence requiring a six-digit pin.

My hands shook as I pulled out the handwritten index card I had found in Arthur's hidden desk drawer. The string of characters—letters, numbers, and symbols—looked like a foreign language. I traced the sequence with my thumb, matching the digits to the secure keypad on the screen.

The screen flickered. A soft chime played, and the desktop unlocked. There were no social media apps, no games, no browser history. Just three items: an encrypted folder labeled Vance_Holding_Audits_2024, a secure messaging app with a single active thread, and a series of audio files labeled with dates.

I tapped the first audio file. A crackle of static filled the small speaker, followed immediately by my grandfather’s frail, unmistakable voice, speaking in a tired, raspy whisper.

"If you're listening to this, Richard has already made his move. He thinks age made me soft, that my stroke left me blind to what he was siphoning out of the foundation's charitable trusts. Four million dollars diverted to offshore accounts in the Caymans, masked as operational overhead. Clara... if anything happens to me, don't trust the lawyers. Don't sign the probate release. The physical ledger is hidden inside the vault at the downtown bank, and the access code is tied to Leo's birth date."

A cold wave washed over me. I wasn't just holding proof of corporate theft; I was holding the exact blueprint of my uncle's downfall.

Suddenly, a sharp knock sounded at my bedroom door.

"Leo?" Marcus’s voice cut through the heavy oak, smooth and dripping with false concern. "Are you awake? Richard wants a word about your school enrollment forms. Open the door, please."

My blood ran cold. The phone screen illuminated my face in the dark room, casting sharp shadows across my wide, terrified hazel eyes. I looked from the glowing screen to the heavy door as the brass knob began slowly, deliberately to turn.
