Chapter 13: The Escape Route

The heavy metal service door of First Liberty Bank swung open with a sharp metallic clatter, spilling Karen and me out into the narrow, shadow-drenched alleyway behind the building. The morning air hit my face like cold water, waking every nerve ending as adrenaline surged through my veins. Above us, the gray sky was beginning to break, letting pale ribbons of sunlight pierce down between the brick tenements. We scrambled behind a row of oversized commercial dumpsters just as the wail of a police cruiser siren echoed around the corner at the end of the block.
"They must have tracked our taxi toll-pass or security badge ping," Karen muttered, her breathing slightly ragged as she clutched her leather briefcase to her chest. She pulled a set of iron skeleton keys from her coat pocket and gestured toward a rusted metal staircase attached to the back of an adjoining brick warehouse. "Up there. That leads to the old municipal steam tunnels that run beneath the entire downtown district. Your grandfather showed them to me during an audit review ten years ago."
I didn't hesitate. I hoisted my backpack higher, grabbed the cold iron railing of the fire escape, and scrambled upward three flights while the sirens grew louder below. Peering down through the open metal grating, I spotted two uniformed officers and Marcus Vance stepping out of a black SUV at the mouth of the alley. Marcus pointed directly toward the service door we had exited moments before, his face twisted in frustrated fury. He knew the net was tightening, and his panic was beginning to show through his polished corporate exterior.
We slipped through an unlocked maintenance hatch near the top of the stairwell and descended into the damp, labyrinthine brick tunnels that stretched beneath the city streets. The air down here smelled of ancient mortar, damp earth, and the distant hum of city traffic vibrating through the pavement overhead. The only illumination came from Karen’s pocket flashlight, cutting a narrow beam through the heavy gloom as we navigated the intersecting corridors.
"We need to reach the north service exit near the Vance Foundation headquarters," Karen said, her voice echoing softly off the curved brick ceiling. "The Vance Foundation centennial gala starts tonight in the grand ballroom. That is where Richard plans to announce his permanent acquisition of the estate and asset portfolio during his keynote address."
"That's his victory lap," I said, walking closely behind her with my hazel eyes scanning the dark alcoves. "And we're going to crash it."
May you like
"Not just crash it, Leo," Karen corrected firmly, stopping at a junction to check a faded brass plaque on the wall. "We are going to walk right through the front doors with federal protection, take the stage during his speech, and let the truth speak for itself."
The realization settled in my chest like an unshakeable anchor. The gala was supposed to be the pinnacle of Richard's deceit—a glittering celebration of charity and glamour masking a stolen legacy. But tonight, under the blinding lights of the grand ballroom, the public facade would finally shatter against the hard, unyielding truth we had uncovered in the dark.
