Chapter 13: The Boardroom Confrontation

The 9:00 AM board meeting was already underway when I pushed open the heavy double doors of the executive suite on the forty-second floor. The room smelled of fresh coffee, expensive leather, and suppressed panic. Seven members of the Sterling Foundation's board sat around the polished walnut table, murmuring anxiously among themselves. Alexander stood at the head of the table, his posture rigid in his immaculate black tuxedo, looking paler than he had the night before. Mrs. Gable stood quietly by the corner near the panoramic windows, holding a leather folder of personnel records.
"Elena," Chairman Vance said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a disapproving frown. "Security should have escorted you out of the building. This is a private executive session."
"It's a public reckoning, Mr. Vance," I said, stepping firmly onto the custom wool carpet. I reached into my canvas bag and laid three printed copies of the financial ledgers and my original conservatory contracts across the polished wood. "Before you discuss next quarter's philanthropic budget, you might want to look at how the last ten years of funding were actually generated—and who was silenced to keep those numbers pristine."
Alexander didn't look at the board members. He kept his eyes locked on me, his jaw tight. Slowly, deliberately, he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a four-page typed document. He laid it flat on the table, right over the corporation's glossy quarterly report.
"Gentlemen," Alexander's voice cut through the murmur of the room, steady and cold. "Before we review the agenda, I am placing my resignation as managing director on the table—effective immediately, unless the board unanimously votes to approve this restructuring agreement."
"Have you lost your mind, Alexander?" Vance slammed his palm onto the table. "You built this foundation from the ground up!"

"I built it on a lie," Alexander said, his dark eyes sweeping across the stunned faces of his oldest allies. "And today, we correct it. Read the document. Every word of it is backed by federal documentation currently sitting in the hands of the U.S. Attorney's office."
The room fell into a dead silence. As Vance picked up the first page and began to read, his face drained of color. I stood tall beside the mahogany table, the diamond pendant catching the morning light streaming through the glass.
