Chapter 12: The Draft

The rain continued to lash against the leaded windows of the estate library as I set the thick manila folder of investigative files back into my canvas bag. Alexander sat at his massive mahogany desk, the green-shaded banker’s lamp casting harsh shadows across his sharp jawline. He stared at the blank screen of his laptop, his fingers hovering over the mechanical keyboard as if touching hot iron. The silence in the room was heavy, thick with the weight of unspooled years and broken contracts. Outside, the distant rumble of thunder rolled over the manicured lawns, a fitting soundtrack for the dismantling of a billionaire's carefully curated facade.

"I can't just hand the entire board a confession about corporate fraud without structured legal protection, Elena," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a raspy, defensive register. "They'll vote to oust me by noon. My father's allies still hold forty percent of the voting shares."

"Then you find a way to outmaneuver them, Alexander," I replied, standing by the cold marble fireplace with my arms crossed over my black maid's uniform. The gold necklace with its diamond ring pendant felt cool against my collarbone, a steady weight grounding me. "You spent ten years building an empire by stepping on everyone who got in your way. Use that same ruthlessness to undo the damage. Tell them the truth about the foundation's silent buyouts, or I walk out that front door right now and hand these duplicates to the federal prosecutor waiting in my car."

Alexander looked up, his dark eyes hollow and bloodshot. The proud, untouchable titan of the New York financial world was gone, replaced by a man who realized his entire kingdom was built on sand. He swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "I'll call emergency counsel at 6:00 AM. We restructure the foundation's endowment, restore the misappropriated arts grants, and issue a joint press release acknowledging your rightful place as Leo's mother and the true artistic director of the conservatory trust."

"And my son?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to stay firm. "Where does Leo sleep tonight?"

"In the master wing, exactly where he belongs," Alexander said softly, looking away toward the dark window. "I told Mrs. Gable to prepare the adjoining suite. He asked for you twice while you were in the shed. I told him you'd be coming up soon."

I let out a slow breath, the tension in my shoulders easing just a fraction. "See that you keep your word, Alexander. Because if you try any last-minute legal maneuver in the morning, I won't hesitate."
