Chapter 11: The Media Storm

The flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm trapped inside a crystal cage. I stood motionless on the third step of the grand staircase, the cool metal of the silver half-moon pendant resting in my palm, reflecting the harsh glare of a dozen camera lenses. Marcus Sterling’s forced smile faltered, his hand freezing halfway to his mouth with the champagne flute. For a fleeting second, the immaculate mask of corporate invulnerability slipped, revealing the raw, frantic panic underneath. The assembled journalists surged forward, their recorders thrust into the air, shouting questions that blurred into a chaotic wall of sound.
"Is that child related to the Vance estate?" a reporter from the Financial Times shouted from the front row.
"Mr. Sterling, is it true you forged probate documents to seize Thomas Vance's estate?" Arthur’s voice cut through the noise like a blade. He stepped down beside me, his tall frame a solid barrier against the surging crowd. He did not raise his voice, but the absolute authority in his tone commanded instant silence in the vast ballroom. He held up a thick manila envelope stamped with the federal court seal. "These documents, detailing the systemic concealment of my late brother's legal heir and the fraudulent diversion of Vance Foundation assets, have just been accepted by the United States District Court."
Marcus finally found his voice, stepping back as the two junior board members flanking him visibly distanced themselves. "This is an outrageous fabrication! A bitter family dispute manufactured by individuals who cannot accept corporate restructuring!" But his hands shook, and the champagne spilled over the rim of his glass onto his immaculate Italian silk suit.

"Fabrications don't carry federal indictments, Marcus," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the room. I let the silver pendant drop back into my tan leather handbag, the snap closing with a sharp, final click. "The press packets are already in your email inboxes. Every bank transfer, every falsified death certificate, every hidden offshore account. Your public empire is built on stolen blood, and today, the foundation is crumbling."
We turned our backs on the flashing cameras and the stunned silence of the high-society elite, walking steadily back up the staircase toward the private elevator. Behind us, the ballroom erupted into a frenzy of frantic phone calls and shouting reporters. As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing out the blinding lights and the noise, Arthur let out a long, ragged breath, his shoulders finally dropping from their rigid posture. We had crossed the point of no return. The battle was no longer fought in the shadows; it was laid bare for the entire world to judge.
