Chapter 10: The Gala Confrontation

The annual Winter Benefactors Gala was the premier social event of the Manhattan season, a dazzling display of wealth, couture gowns, and glittering diamond jewelry beneath the crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom. Downstairs, flashbulbs popped as society columnists photographed politicians, corporate titans, and philanthropists sipping champagne. But upstairs in the private executive parlor overlooking the ballroom, the atmosphere was entirely different.

I stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting my diamond-and-pearl earrings, wearing an emerald-green silk gown that commanded attention without begging for it. Arthur checked his cuff links, his eyes reflecting the soft amber glow of the wall sconces.

"The journalists from the Times and the Wall Street Journal are downstairs, exactly where we wanted them," Arthur confirmed, tapping his phone screen. "Our legal team just filed the federal injunction and criminal referral against Marcus for corporate fraud and child abduction."

"Then it is time," I said, picking up my tan leather handbag—the very bag that still held the shattered silver half-moon pendant and Thomas's hidden journal.

We descended the grand staircase together, stepping out onto the mezzanine that overlooked the swirling mass of high-society guests below. The moment our presence was noted, the ambient chatter in the ballroom dipped perceptibly. Cameras immediately pivoted from the celebrity guests toward us. Standing near the center of the room, flanked by two nervous junior board members, was Marcus Sterling. He held a flute of champagne, his face flushed with the false confidence of a man who believed he had successfully locked us out of power.

Marcus caught sight of us on the stairs and raised his glass in a mocking, public toast, stepping toward the base of the staircase to intercept us before we reached the floor.

"Margaret, Arthur," Marcus called out, his voice carrying clearly over the hushed room. "How wonderful of you to grace us with your presence, despite... recent family distractions. Given the distressing rumors circulating about your judgment lately, the board has already voted to temporarily suspend your executive authority."

The cameras flashed blindingly, capturing every nuance of the confrontation. The public glamour of the gala stood in sharp, brutal contrast to the dark truth we carried in our hands. I paused on the third step down, looking directly into Marcus's widening, panicked eyes as I reached into my handbag and pulled out the matching half of the silver pendant, letting it catch the brilliant light of the crystal chandelier above.
