Chapter 7: Shadows in the Ballroom

The ballroom was suffocatingly warm, filled with the scent of expensive perfume, freshly cut orchids, and the underlying electric current of immense wealth. Julian led me toward the VIP seating area directly beneath the elevated stage, where the foundation's board members and major donors sat waiting for the program to commence. I kept my posture rigidly upright, every muscle coiled like a spring. Every glance from across the room felt scrutinizing, though I knew most people were merely admiring the sparkle of my gown or whispering about the evening's donation goals.
Julian took his seat in the center wingback chair, gesturing for me to sit beside him. He leaned in close, his breath smelling faintly of aged scotch as he whispered in my ear. “Keep your hands off that pocket,” he murmured smoothly, his smile fixed for the cameras pointed directly at us. “You’re sweating, Eleanor. Hold your head up. Don't humiliate me.”
“I’m fine, Julian,” I whispered back, not looking at him, instead focusing on the bank of media cameras lined up at the back of the hall.
On stage, the executive director of the foundation took the microphone, delivering a glowing retrospective of Julian’s philanthropic achievements. The audience applauded politely at each fabricated milestone, entirely unaware of the shell companies and forged ledgers resting safely in the hands of federal authorities. I reached discreetly into the hidden fold of my navy blue dress, my fingertips tracing the edge of the backup flash drive. If anything happened to the digital transmission sent earlier, this physical token was our final insurance policy.

Maya remained stationed near the service doors at the edge of the ballroom, her dark dress blending into the shadows, a vigilant sentinel watching over the room's periphery. Whenever Julian looked away to applaud the speaker, Maya gave me a microscopic nod, signaling that the east wing was secure and Leo was resting peacefully away from the chaos. That small reassurance gave me the courage to breathe deeper, keeping my panic carefully locked behind a serene, unreadable expression.
The director’s speech wound down to a crescendo, and the applause swelled. Julian rose gracefully from his seat, adjusting his lapels with practiced elegance. He was scheduled to deliver the keynote address—the centerpiece of the evening, where he planned to announce a massive, multi-million-dollar expansion of his corporate empire under the guise of charitable outreach. It was the exact moment we had been waiting for. As Julian stepped toward the stairs leading up to the stage, the spotlight followed him like a golden halo, blinding him to the subtle movement of federal agents quietly entering through the service doors at the back of the hall.
