Chapter 6: The Descent to the Gala

The descent down the grand marble staircase felt like walking the plank, every step magnified by the flashing lights and the low murmur of anticipation from the ballroom below. Julian’s hand was a heavy band of iron around my elbow, guiding me with proprietary precision. To the hundreds of high-society guests, politicians, and journalists gathered beneath the crystal chandeliers, we were the picture of domestic bliss—a successful philanthropist, his elegant wife in a sparkling navy blue gown, and an empire built on charity and grace. But beneath the surface veneer, my heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, and the cold metal of the hidden memory card pressed against my thigh like a ticking clock.
At the foot of the stairs, near the polished black-and-white checkered floor where Leo had fallen just weeks ago, Maya stood holding a silver tray of champagne flutes. Her face remained a mask of perfect, professional neutrality, but as I drew near, our eyes met for a fraction of a second. That tiny glance communicated volumes—a silent reinforcement of our shared pact. She had Leo safely tucked away in the east wing under private security, and the physical evidence of Julian's financial crimes was already transmitted to federal prosecutor Richard Vance. All I had to do was play my part until the trap finally sprang shut.
Julian stopped halfway down the landing to greet a prominent city councilman, flashing his trademark charismatic smile that never quite reached his cold, calculating eyes. I forced my lips into a polite, serene curve, nodding appropriately as compliments were tossed our way regarding the foundation’s annual charity drive.
“Eleanor, my dear, you look breathtaking tonight,” the councilman remarked, raising his glass in a toast. “Julian is a lucky man to have such a gracious partner by his side.”
“Thank you,” I replied, my voice steady, though every word felt like swallowing glass. “Julian always knows how to pick the right attire for the occasion.”

Julian chuckled, a rich, baritone sound that resonated through the open foyer. “She is my greatest asset, councilman. Now, if you’ll excuse us, the keynote address is about to begin on the main stage.”
We moved through the crowd, accepting polite nods and handshakes. Every smiling face around us represented a network of complicity and power that Julian had spent decades cultivating. They saw a benefactor; I saw a wall of mirrors hiding a cage. As we reached the perimeter of the ballroom, I scanned the crowd for any sign of Vance or his agents, knowing the timing had to be absolute perfection. One false move, and Julian’s security team would intercept us before a single word could be said. The air grew thick with tension, and the bright camera flashes began to feel less like a celebration and more like an interrogation.
