Chapter 7: The Morning After

The morning sunlight cut harshly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Damian's executive office, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. I stood near the edge of his mahogany desk, my posture straight, my hands folded neatly in front of me.

Damian didn't look up from his tablet. The silence in the room was absolute, save for the rhythmic tapping of his gold fountain pen against the glass surface of the desk. When he finally raised his head, his eyes were pitch-black with suppressed rage. The veneer of corporate charm had vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating fury.

"She's gone," Damian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "The smart house perimeter sensors flagged a vehicle departure at 01:14 hours. The security logs show an unauthorized override on the outer gate code. And your name, Evelyn, is listed on the electronic access request for that specific frequency."

"The NDI enforcement was legally flawed, Damian," I replied, my voice steady, refusing to let him see the tremor in my hands. "Clara had a right to seek independent legal counsel. The foundation cannot legally hold a mother and child against their will under the guise of corporate discretion."

Damian stood up slowly, pushing his chair back with a sharp scrape against the hardwood floor. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches away from me. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with the metallic tang of pure hostility. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to.

"You arrogant little fool," Damian whispered, leaning in close so that only I could hear. "You think you've won something, don't you? You think you can smuggle a witness out from under my nose and walk away with your pension and your pristine professional reputation? I built this foundation brick by brick. Every board member, every state prosecutor, every major donor—they all answer to me. By noon today, I'm filing criminal charges of corporate espionage and breach of fiduciary duty against you."

"File whatever charges you want, Damian," I said, meeting his gaze without flinching, remembering the encrypted cloud archive currently sitting on a secure, off-site server managed by Marcus. "The truth has a way of outlasting administrative mandates. And by the time the annual gala starts on Friday night, the entire world is going to see exactly what kind of man operates behind the public glamour of this foundation."

Damian's hand twitched toward his side, the old instinct to intimidate physically flaring up before he caught himself, realizing the glass walls of the office were fully transparent to the junior analysts walking past in the hallway. He forced a thin, venomous smile, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle jumped.

"Enjoy your remaining forty-eight hours of freedom, Evelyn," he whispered, his voice like ice. "Because when I'm done with you, you won't even be able to find a job cleaning floors in this city."

He turned his back on me and walked to the window, dismissing me with a flick of his wrist. I turned on my heel and walked out of the office, closing the heavy glass door behind me. My heart was pounding against my ribs, but as I walked down the bright hallway toward the elevator, I felt a profound sense of lightness. The trap had sprung, the lines were drawn, and the final confrontation at the gala was now inevitable.
