Chapter 14: The Live Broadcast

The AV control room was a cramped, humming cube of electronic equipment, glowing monitors, and tangled cables. Marcus sat hunched over the primary mixing console, his fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced precision. The main monitor flickered with live camera feeds of the grand ballroom, showing the sea of tuxedoed guests settling into their seats as the string quartet began to wind down its final number.
"You're right on time," Marcus whispered without looking up, his eyes locked on the scrolling lines of code cascading down his secondary monitor. "Damian is stepping up to the podium in less than two minutes. The master override is cued and waiting for your input."
I stepped beside him, unbuttoning the top button of my black blazer. My hands were remarkably steady as I reached into my pocket and pulled out the encrypted flash drive. The red indicator light on the console pulsed slowly, a mechanical heartbeat counting down the seconds until the illusion shattered.
"Is the dead-man's backup deployed?" I asked, keeping my voice low and focused.
"Fully active," Marcus replied, glancing up at me for a fraction of a second. "If they cut power to this room or try to storm the door, the archive automatically streams to every major news outlet and federal compliance server simultaneously. There's no stopping it once you plug that drive in."
On the preview monitor, we watched as Damian walked up the carpeted steps to the center of the stage. The applause swelled, rolling through the grand ballroom like a physical wave. Damian smiled, adjusting the microphone stand with practiced grace, raising a hand to quiet the adulation of the elite crowd. His dark hair caught the stage lights, and his gray suit shimmered under the spotlights. He looked every bit the benevolent philanthropist, the visionary leader of a foundation dedicated to protecting the vulnerable.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Damian's voice boomed through the overhead speakers, rich, resonant, and dripping with practiced humility. "Thank you so much for gathering tonight to support our shared vision of corporate integrity and community care..."
"Now, Evelyn," Marcus murmured, his hand hovering over the execution key.
I stepped forward, aligned the small metal connector with the master console's secure USB port, and pushed the flash drive firmly home. A sharp beep echoed softly from the console. Marcus struck the enter key with a decisive tap.
On the massive projector screens hanging above the stage—screens that were supposed to display Damian's corporate presentation slides—the smiling image of Damian vanished instantly. In its place, the high-definition smart house camera footage flickered to life.
The bright, hardwood-floored hallway materialized in crisp, unedited detail. The audio feed cut through the grand ballroom's high-end sound system with brutal clarity: the sound of Clara screaming in absolute terror, falling backward onto the floor while clutching her infant child, and Damian stepping forward with a menacing, aggressive snarl.
“He's not your property! Leave us alone!” Clara's voice echoed off the crystal chandeliers, ringing through the silent, stunned ballroom.

The applause died instantly. The murmurs froze on people's lips. Hundreds of elite guests turned their heads toward the giant screens in collective disbelief, watching the unvarnished truth play out in real time. The smart house footage continued rolling, transitioning seamlessly into the moment Damian grabbed me by the throat, choking me fiercely against the wall while whispering his cold, quiet threats.
On stage, Damian froze mid-sentence. His smile vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer panic as he turned around to look up at the massive screens displaying his private brutality to the entire philanthropic world. The mask of glamour and philanthropy had been ripped away, leaving only the raw, ugly truth exposed beneath the lights.
