Chapter 10: The Injunction Hearing

The marble corridors of the federal courthouse echoed with the sharp click of heels and hushed legal arguments as we walked toward Courtroom 4B. The morning light filtered through the tall arched windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the floor—a stark reminder of the grand foyer where this entire nightmare had begun. Julian kept a protective hand resting lightly on the small of my back, guiding me through the media throng clustered near the double doors. Flashbulbs popped blindingly, and reporters shouted questions, but federal marshals formed an impenetrable barrier, keeping the chaos at bay.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Elena sat at the defense table flanked by two high-priced attorneys from the city, her posture rigid, her green silk dress replaced by a severe charcoal-gray designer suit. She didn't turn to look at us as we took our seats at the plaintiff’s table, but I could feel the palpable hostility radiating from her shoulders.

Judge Henderson entered promptly at nine o'clock, her expression severe as she reviewed the thick stack of final motions. "This court reconvenes to hear arguments regarding the emergency injunction and permanent guardianship petition," Judge Henderson announced, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "Furthermore, the court has received the complete forensic accounting report regarding the Sterling Foundation."

Arthur Vance stood, buttoning his suit jacket with calm precision. "Your Honor, we submit the final audit proving systematic embezzlement of over six million dollars, alongside certified pediatric welfare reports documenting severe domestic intimidation and neglect." He turned and gestured toward the courtroom's central media screen. "With the court's permission, we request the playback of the recovered security footage from the Sterling estate foyer on the night of October twelfth."

Elena’s lead attorney shot out of his chair. "Objection, Your Honor! Prejudicial and inflammatory!"

"Overruled, counselor," Judge Henderson snapped, leaning forward. "The court needs to understand the exact context of the minor's endangerment. Play the footage."

The courtroom lights dimmed, and on the large wall screen, the high-definition video began to roll. The sharp sound of Elena screaming filled the quiet room. On screen, the red-haired woman lunged furiously with bared teeth, demanding I drop the infant, before the camera caught her face shifting into wide-eyed horror as she realized Julian had witnessed the entire outburst. The silence in the courtroom was absolute. Every eye shifted from the screen to Elena, whose face had gone completely pale under her heavy makeup. The public facade was no longer just cracking; it was shattering into a million irretrievable pieces.
