The crystal chandelier above the grand foyer cast a cold, fractured light across the polished marble floor. I stood frozen in my grey maid uniform, the stiff white apron and cap feeling like armor that had suddenly failed me. Just seconds before, the silence of the Sterling estate had been shattered by a shriek that echoed off the high limestone walls. Elena—my own sister, though the world knew her only as the untouchable, red-haired socialite in the emerald green silk dress—had hurled herself across the room with wide, enraged eyes and bared teeth.
"Get your dirty hands off that!" she had screamed, her voice a whip-crack of pure venom.
Before I could process her rage, her high-heeled shoe clipped the edge of the Persian rug, sending her lunging forward. In her blind fury to snatch the leather ledger from my grip, she shoved past the wicker bassinet. The infant inside whimpered once before tumbling out onto the unyielding stone.
My body moved before my mind could catch up. I dropped to my knees on the cold marble, sliding across the slick surface to scoop the crying baby, little Leo, into my arms. I pressed his small, shivering body against my chest, murmuring frantic reassurances while my own hands trembled. The silk of my apron muffled his tiny gasps.
Elena caught her balance, her chest heaving beneath the high slit of her gown. Her expression shifted in a terrifying heartbeat from demonic fury to stark, wide-eyed horror as she stared not at me, but past my shoulder.
