Chapter 8: Estate Gala Preview

By seven o'clock, the estate had transformed into a glittering showcase of wealth and philanthropy. String quartet music drifted down from the balcony, mingling with the soft clinking of crystal champagne flutes and the polite laughter of wealthy donors in designer evening wear. Marcus stood near the main staircase, holding court with a group of city council members and foundation board directors, his smile wide and charming as he accepted their praise for his charitable initiatives. Standing a few paces behind him, Elena played her part to perfection, nodding at the right moments and offering polite, rehearsed pleasantries.
I moved quietly through the perimeter of the ballroom, dressed in my standard black-and-white staff uniform, blending seamlessly into the background the way servants always do in houses like this. To the wealthy elite sipping wine under the crystal chandeliers, I was simply part of the architecture—a pair of hands to clear away empty glasses and keep the hors d'oeuvres stocked. But underneath my calm exterior, my pulse hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The silver key rested heavy and cold against my thigh, tucked securely inside my pocket.

Using the distraction of a heated debate over municipal zoning laws near the bar, I slipped away from the edge of the ballroom and ducked behind the velvet drapery leading into the private service corridor. The air grew noticeably cooler away from the crowd, the ambient noise fading into a muffled hum. I kept my head down, walking with a brisk, purposeful stride as if I were carrying out an urgent errand for the head chef. When I reached the heavy mahogany door of the upstairs study, I paused, pressing my ear against the polished wood to listen for any sound of movement inside.
The room was completely silent. I pulled the silver key from my pocket, sliding it into the ornate brass lock with practiced care. It turned with a soft, familiar click, and the heavy door gave way just enough for me to slip inside into the dim, shadow-filled sanctuary where Marcus kept his secrets. The glowing blue light of the computer terminal on the mahogany desk cast long, eerie shadows across the leather-bound books lining the walls. This was it—the point of no return.
