Chapter 12: Morning Headlines

Dawn broke gray and heavy over the Seattle skyline, casting long, somber shadows across the polished marble foyer of the Vance estate. The front gates, usually wide open for incoming deliveries and staff vehicles, were chained shut by strict order of Marcus himself, who was desperately trying to seal the perimeter against an encroaching tide of public scandal. Inside, the heavy silence of the sprawling mansion was broken only by the aggressive pinging of wall-mounted monitors receiving endless security alerts and the muffled, furious shouting echoing from the private study down the hall where Marcus had sequestered himself with his legal advisors.

I stood by the stainless-steel kitchen counter, pouring a measured cup of black coffee while watching the live morning news broadcast on the small television screen mounted quietly in the corner. The red breaking-news banner scrolling relentlessly across the bottom of the screen read: Vance Foundation Under Federal Scrutiny Following Massive Data Leak. High-definition images of the foundation's sleek downtown headquarters flashed across the screen, interspersed with photographs of Marcus smiling next to city officials and prominent civic leaders. Investigative journalists on cable news were already picking apart the leaked financial ledgers, the complex offshore shell accounts, and the falsified grant allocations that we had successfully extracted from the wall safe just days earlier during the charity gala preview.

Elena walked into the kitchen, her steps measured, deliberate, and entirely calm. For the first time since I had stepped foot inside the estate as a housemaid, she wasn't wearing her anxiety like a suffocating shield. She looked visibly lighter, as though a heavy physical weight had finally been lifted from her shoulders, despite the absolute chaos erupting around the household.

"He's been on the encrypted phone line with his primary legal team for three hours straight," Elena said, her voice steady and clear as she walked over to the counter and poured herself a cup of coffee. "He’s trying every trick in the book to scrub the local office servers, but the primary data packets were already mirrored off-site and delivered straight to federal investigators. There's nowhere left for him to hide behind his philanthropic facade."

Before I could answer or offer a reassuring nod, heavy, rapid footsteps echoed loudly on the tile floor outside the kitchen threshold. The swinging wooden door burst open with a sharp crack, and Marcus stood there in the doorway. His usually immaculate hair was thoroughly disheveled, his expensive silk suit jacket had been discarded entirely, and his face was terrifyingly pale, painted with a toxic mixture of unadulterated rage and sheer, consuming panic. He looked directly at us, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and burning with a sudden, horrifying realization that the catastrophic leak hadn't originated from some anonymous hacker across the country, but from the very people he had always considered entirely beneath his notice.
