Chapter 4: The Hidden Ledger

I left the Grand Parlor without signing the paper, leaving the manila folder sitting untouched on the mahogany table while Helena’s cold, furious stare burned holes into my back all the way to the heavy doors. They didn't fire me on the spot—that wasn't their way. In the Bellacorte world, defiance was handled with patience; they would isolate me, starve out my allies, and make my position untenable until I broke on my own terms.

By mid-afternoon, I was back in the private dining room, the very scene of the crime, tasked with scrubbing down the remnants of the evening gala before the evening service. The room was empty, save for the pale sunlight streaming through the tall stained-glass windows, casting long, colored shadows across the expanse of the heavy wooden table. The crystal chandelier above was dark now, cold and motionless.

I knelt beside the large dining table, wiping down the carved oak legs with a damp cloth, my mind racing through the options Vincent had left me. If Helena decided to move against Leo, neither my locked door nor Vincent’s warnings would be enough to keep us safe in this fortress of stone and shadows.

As my hand brushed against the lower molding of the central table leg, my fingertips caught on something unusual—a tiny, raised brass toggle that I had never noticed during months of cleaning. I paused, glancing toward the arched double doors to ensure the hallway was empty. With a soft click, the molding panel slid sideways on hidden brass tracks, revealing a shallow, velvet-lined compartment carved directly into the heart of the solid oak table.

Inside sat a single, leather-bound ledger with no title on the cover, accompanied by a small stack of polaroid photographs.

My breath caught in my throat as I pulled the ledger out. I flipped the cover open with a trembling thumb. The pages were filled with meticulous, handwritten columns of figures, names of offshore shell companies, local politicians, and high-ranking law enforcement officials, alongside staggering sums of money transferred under encrypted codes. But it was the name at the top of every page that made the blood freeze in my veins: Bellacorte-Adrian Trust.

Adrian wasn't just an associate or an enforcer. According to the entries spanning the last five years, Adrian was systematically bleeding the Bellacorte empire dry while quietly gathering leverage to stage a hostile corporate takeover, using fabricated scandals and coerced testimonies—just like the one he had tried to force on Leo—to neutralize anyone who stood in his way. Even Vincent.

Before I could close the book, a shadow fell across the doorway. I shoved the ledger deep into the pocket of my uniform apron and scrambled to my feet just as Adrian stepped into the room, his expensive leather shoes clicking softly against the parquet floor, a cold, predatory smile playing across his bruised mouth.
