Chapter 14: Restoring the Sanctuary

By evening, the Bellacorte mansion felt entirely transformed, shedding the oppressive chill that had defined its halls for as long as I could remember. The staff had gathered in the large country kitchen downstairs for an early dinner, laughing naturally and sharing stories without casting nervous glances toward the stairwell or whispering about who might be listening behind the doors. I sat at the end of the long wooden table, peeling an apple with a small silver knife, listening to the comfortable chatter of the cooks and gardeners who had survived the turbulent transition.

Vincent appeared in the doorway a few minutes later, still wearing his dark wool sweater, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms as he leaned against the doorframe. The harsh, intimidating aura of the mafia patriarch had completely faded, replaced by the quiet, grounded presence of a father who was finally learning how to breathe in his own home. He caught my eye across the room and gave a subtle nod, signaling for me to step outside into the courtyard for a moment of quiet air.

We walked out onto the stone patio together, the cool night breeze carrying the crisp scent of pine and damp earth from the surrounding hills. Above us, a billion stars burned brightly in the clear autumn sky, entirely unobstructed by the city smog or the artificial glare of the estate's floodlights, which Vincent had ordered turned off earlier that evening. Little Leo was already asleep upstairs in his own nursery, safe in his bed without a miniature suit or tie anywhere in sight.

"The board accepted my resignation from the holding companies," Vincent said quietly, leaning his forearms against the stone balustrade. "The transition to independent oversight is already underway. From now on, the Bellacorte name will stand on legitimate ground, or it won't stand at all."

"And you're okay with leaving that entire world behind?" I asked, looking up at him as the moonlight caught the sharp, clean lines of his face.

"I'm not leaving anything behind, Maria," Vincent turned to look down at me, his gaze softening completely. "I'm finally stepping into the life I should have built years ago—one where my son doesn't have to grow up looking over his shoulder, and where honesty matters more than reputation."

I smiled softly, the cool night air feeling refreshingly clean against my skin. "It's a good place to start."
