Chapter 7: Uncovering the Past

The secure study on the estate's lower level smelled of old paper, leather binding, and floor wax. Marcus had turned the windowless room into an impromptu command center, its walls lined with monitors displaying financial flowcharts, server logs, and background checks. The blue glow from the screens cast sharp shadows across his strong, square jaw as he scrolled through a dense dossier.
“She’s good,” Marcus said without looking up, tapping a finger against the trackpad. “Elena Vance isn’t just a garden-variety opportunist. Ten years ago, she operated under a different name in Chicago—Elena Rostova. She was tied to a corporate asset-stripping scheme that left a prominent family bankrupt and broken. She played the loyal assistant there, too, until the patriarch died under mysterious, unverified circumstances.”
I pulled my beige cardigan tighter around my shoulders, sitting in the leather armchair across from his desk. The room was cool, but my palms felt hot and damp. “And the local authorities back then?”
“Bribed, or legally stonewalled,” Marcus replied, finally looking up. His intense, protective eyes met mine, steadying my racing pulse. “She knows how to exploit the cracks in the legal system. She stays just on the right side of direct violence, pushing people to the psychological edge until they either break or make a mistake that looks like self-destruction. Exactly what she tried to do to you on that balcony.”
“She came to my suite this morning,” I said quietly, recounting the conversation word for word. “She made it clear that if I push back, she’ll accelerate her plans to declare me mentally incompetent before the baby arrives. She thinks she holds all the cards because she believes our local sheriff is in her pocket.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath his skin. “The local sheriff might be accustomed to looking the other way for generous donations to the county charity fund, but federal forensic accountants don’t care about local politics. The financial package we compiled this morning has already been transmitted securely to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan. By tomorrow afternoon, those Cayman accounts will be frozen under federal seal.”
“And what about the estate?” I asked, looking at the architectural blueprints of the grand house spread across the desk. “This place... my family built this foundation. I won’t let her turn it into a shell corporation for her crimes.”
“She won't,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. “We let her walk into her own trap. Tomorrow night is the annual spring charity gala in the main ballroom. Every major investor, local magistrate, and board member will be in attendance under those crystal chandeliers. Elena is planning to use that exact public platform to announce her new executive appointment over your holdings.”
A cold realization settled over me. “She wants to humiliate me publicly while presenting herself as my savior.”

“Exactly,” Marcus nodded, a grim, calculated smile touching his lips. “So we let her take the stage. We let her build the narrative right up to the climax. And then, we pull the rug out from under her in front of every single witness she invited.”
We spent the next three hours reviewing the technical setup for the ballroom's audiovisual system, ensuring that the encrypted files, bank records, and unedited security logs could be streamed directly to the main projection screens without interference. Every detail was meticulously planned. There would be no room for error, no second chances, and no escape for Elena once the light hit the darkness she had spent years cultivating.
