Chapter 11: The Staged Applause

The applause that followed Elena’s opening remarks rolled over the ballroom like a warm, suffocating wave. People leaned across their tables, nodding in rapt admiration as she stood at the center of the mahogany stage, bathed in the cool white glare of the spotlight. She looked every bit the benevolent philanthropist, her red silk blouse catching the light of the crystal chandelier overhead while her dark hair was styled into an effortless, cascading knot. Every gesture she made was calculated, rehearsed to project humility and grace to the room full of influential donors, city officials, and press photographers.
I sat motionless at our designated table near the front, my fingers resting lightly over the matte-black metal casing of the remote device hidden inside my velvet evening clutch. Marcus stood like a monolith a step behind my chair, his broad shoulders filling out the cut of his black suit, his dark gaze unblinking as he tracked every movement on the stage.
“Thank you for your unwavering trust,” Elena continued, her voice rich and melodic, carrying effortlessly through the high-end acoustic speakers. “For years, this foundation has stood as a beacon of integrity. Every dollar entrusted to us has been guarded with absolute devotion. We believe in transparency. We believe in truth.”
A ripple of appreciative murmurs swept through the audience. Several prominent board members nodded sagely, entirely unaware of the phantom accounts and forged documents sitting in federal archives just blocks away. Elena paused, allowing the manufactured sentiment to settle over the crowd before delivering her transition. It was the exact moment we had rehearsed for in our quiet strategy sessions—the precise second when her public theater reached its absolute zenith.
I felt a cold calm settle into my chest. The trembling anxiety that had once defined my existence in that grand estate had burned away, replaced by a quiet, steady resolve. I looked from Elena’s radiant face down to the small blue LED light blinking faintly beneath the flap of my purse.
“Now,” Elena said, her smile widening just enough to show the polished perfection of her teeth, “before we move to the dinner service, I want to share a very special retrospective of our recent achievements. If the AV team will please direct their attention to the main screens—”
She swept her hand toward the massive, high-definition projection screens flanking the stage. The house lights dimmed by half, plunging the edges of the ballroom into shadow while the massive displays flashed bright blue, waiting for the feed.
Instead of the corporate promotional reel of smiling orphans and suburban construction sites, the screens flickered. A sharp, high-resolution still image filled the left monitor with sudden, jarring clarity. It was a digital scan of a bank transfer authorization form, bearing what looked like my signature at the bottom, alongside a Cayman Islands routing number.
Elena’s hand froze mid-gesture. Her smile hitched, her lips parting on a breath that died instantly in her throat.
For a three-count, the ballroom was dead silent. The hundreds of wealthy patrons stared up at the glowing document, trying to process the dry financial data splashed across the multi-million-dollar display. Then, a low murmur of confusion rippled through the front row.

On the stage, Elena’s head snapped toward the back control booth, her face draining of its practiced color until her pale skin matched the stark white linen of the tablecloths below. Her fingers gripped the wooden podium so hard her knuckles turned translucent, the public mask slipping away to reveal the raw, panicked calculation underneath.
I did not move. I simply looked up at her, letting her catch my eye across the thirty feet of polished hardwood floor, and slowly pressed my thumb down against the remote button in my lap.
