Chapter 12: The Courthouse Steps

The marble steps of the county courthouse gleamed coldly under the glare of mid-morning flashbulbs and television cameras. Word of the emergency injunction had leaked to the local press, drawing a swarm of reporters eager for a scandal involving one of the city's most prominent philanthropic families. Martha stepped out of a sleek black town car near the plaza, flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys, her expression rigidly composed in her signature maroon cardigan and pearls, projecting an image of a grieving, wronged grandmother fighting for the protection of an innocent child.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase beside Clara and Elena, holding Lily securely against my shoulder. My heart hammered a slow, heavy rhythm against my ribs, but my hands were steady. As Martha caught sight of us standing before the heavy oak doors of the courtroom, her stride faltered for a fraction of a second—just a microscopic twitch of her jaw and a tightening of her lips that the cameras mercifully failed to capture.
"You can't win this, Lucas," Martha hissed quietly as she reached the landing, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper meant only for our ears. "I own the foundation, I own the estate, and I own the judge who’s sitting on this bench today. Hand the girl over now, and I might let you walk away without a ruined career."

"Your time is up, Martha," I said, my voice completely calm, carrying the weight of absolute certainty as I looked straight into her cold, unyielding eyes. "The shell corporation is exposed. The non-disclosure agreement was signed under criminal duress. And Dr. Harrison’s medical report on Lily is already on the federal prosecutor’s desk."
Martha’s face went pale beneath her powder, her veneer of aristocratic composure cracking for the first time in her life. Before she could formulate a response, the heavy oak doors swung open wide from the inside, and the bailiff stepped out onto the landing, calling our names into the echoing hall. Clara took Lily’s small, warm hand in hers, and together, with Elena walking steadfastly at our flank, we turned our backs on the cameras and walked past Martha into the courtroom, stepping out of the shadows and into the full, unforgiving light of the truth.
