Chapter 10: The Confrontation with Clara

I pushed the interior door open all the way, stepping into a dimly lit kitchen that smelled of old books and dried lavender. Standing by the small porcelain sink was a woman in a faded gray sweater, her dark hair pulled back into a loose, untidy knot. She turned around sharply at the sound of my footsteps, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she stared at me across the narrow room. It was Clara. She looked older, lines of exhaustion etched deeply around her eyes and mouth, but the fierce, unmistakable spark in her gaze remained unchanged.

"Lucas?" she whispered, her hands gripping the edge of the counter as if she needed the wooden surface to keep from collapsing. "How... how did you find me? Did Martha send you?"

"Martha didn't send me," I said, holding my hands up palms-up to show I meant no harm, stepping cautiously across the floor. "I took Lily out of her house three days ago, Clara. I finally saw the bruises. I finally read the ledger."

Clara let out a ragged gasp, her knees buckling slightly as she lowered herself into a nearby wooden chair. She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, delayed grief. For a long moment, neither of us spoke, the heavy weight of three separated years hanging in the stale air between us. When she finally looked back up at me, tears tracked silently down her cheeks.

"I didn't want to leave her, Lucas," she said, her voice cracking with suppressed agony. "On my life, I never wanted to walk away from my baby. But Martha called me into her study the night after your father died. She had a folder of fabricated financial fraud charges with my signature forged on every page. She told me if I didn't walk out that front door before sunrise, she would use her judges and her lawyers to put me in prison for twenty years and ensure Lily never even learned my name."

"I know," I said, pulling up a chair and sitting down directly across from her, my voice thick with emotion. "Elena showed me the shell corporation records. She engineered the whole thing to seize control of the family trust and cut us both out completely."

"She’s a monster," Clara said fiercely, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her sweater. "And she won't stop until she destroys you too, Lucas. She owns half the municipal courts in this county. If you try to fight her in a standard custody hearing without absolute proof of her financial crimes, she will crush you."

"That’s why I came here," I replied, leaning forward across the table. "I need your testimony, Clara. Not just for me—for Lily. We have to go back and end this once and for all."
