Chapter 2: Sanctuary Behind Closed Doors

The sound of Richard scrambling to his feet behind us was masked by the sudden murmurs of arriving guests gathering near the ballroom archway. Eleanor ignored them entirely. She crossed the remaining distance of the foyer, her beige trench coat swishing gently, and dropped to her knees beside me.
"Lily, my sweet girl," Eleanor murmured, her voice trembling with a raw emotion she fought hard to keep contained.
Lily broke away from my embrace and threw her arms around her mother's neck, sobbing into the lapel of the trench coat. Eleanor held her tight, closing her eyes as a single tear escaped down her cheek. It was a picture of genuine love that no amount of foundation PR money could ever fake or buy.
Security guards in black suits began pushing through the crowd, their earpieces glowing faintly in the dim light. "Sir, do you need assistance?" one of them asked, rushing toward Richard, who was now standing, brushing off his blue suit with shaking hands, his face a dark shade of mottled crimson.
"Get them out of my sight!" Richard hissed, trying to regain his composure while keeping his voice low enough to avoid the gathering socialites. "She's trespassing! Call the police! That woman is legally declared—"
"Declared what, Richard?" Eleanor interrupted, standing up slowly while keeping a firm, protective hand on Lily's shoulder. She looked down at her husband with a chilling clarity. "Dead? Convenient, wasn't it? Just long enough for you to loot my father's estate and lock our daughter away in this gilded cage."
The murmurs among the onlookers swelled. Flash photography from a lingering tabloid freelancer sparked near the grand staircase. Richard's face went pale. He lunged forward, but I stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with my height and the heavy leather of my jacket.
"Don't," I said quietly, the warning in my tone sharp enough to make him pause.
"James, I will ruin you," Richard spat, his eyes darting toward the crowd. "You're an employee—a mechanic turned caretaker. You have no right—"
"I have every right to ensure this child is safe," I replied evenly.
Eleanor didn't wait for the confrontation to escalate. She looked at me, giving a sharp, decisive nod. "James, help us inside."
I grabbed the handle of the heavy mahogany double doors leading to Richard's private library just off the foyer. It was a room meant for secret business deals and quiet whiskey pours, lined with leather-bound law books that had never been read. We slipped inside, Lily clutching her mother's hand, and I slammed the heavy oak door shut, throwing the deadbolt just as Richard's fists began pounding against the exterior wood.
"Eleanor! Open this door right now or I swear I'll have you arrested for kidnapping!" Richard's muffled voice roared from the hallway.
Inside, the room was dark except for the amber glow of a desk lamp. Lily was shivering again, sitting on a leather chesterfield sofa. Eleanor knelt in front of her, whispering soothing reassurances, but her eyes were scanning the mahogany bookshelves with intense purpose.

"He thinks he's untouchable," Eleanor said softly, turning to me. "For two years, I've been fighting just to get back inside this house. They told me I was unstable. They locked me away in a clinic three states over while he stripped my name from every board of directors."
"Not anymore," I said, stepping toward the large oak desk. "You're back. And whatever he's hiding in this room, we're going to find it before his private security figures out how to pick this lock."
